I strive to instill in students the need for independence in learning. Given the amount of information being generated today, I firmly believe in 'just-in-time' education. Students to be independent learners need to know where to find information when they need it. To attempt to follow the outdated 'just-in-case' learning philosophy, whereby students learn material that might be relevant in the future, overwhelms and frustrates the individual, creating professionals that might not succeed in their fields. Providing a strong foundational understanding to students in combination with fostering student's experience with self-learning is essential for success in today's society and market.
My professional activities mostly involve research, outreach, and teaching. The main reason I choose teaching as part of my profession is to ensure I can contribute to the success of future professionals. In sharing my life and professional experiences with students, I provide them with an awareness that might serve them well in making the right choices in life and smooth out the many challenges that might be presented along their personal and professional life.
Aside from ‘street knowledge’, I am prepared to teach classes in the life sciences and classes in the more quantitative or technical fields. More specifically, I can teach general biology, ecology, or zoology, especially when applied to the marine or coastal environments. As for the ‘hard sciences’, I can teach statistics, algebra, calculus, and differential equations. Because of my professional experience involving the technical field, I can also teach classes to prepare students to become effective professionals in the technical field. Classes I can teach in that area include database management and design, web development, and general programming classes.
All of the classes I teach involve a strong applied component to ensure students can properly place the material in the ‘real world’ and effectively use it to forward their professional careers. My teaching method mostly involves student discussions. Discussions serve the purpose of keeping attention in class and monitoring their subject understanding. When eliciting comments, questions, and discussions, I can gauge my effectiveness in teaching.
Other ways to measure my teaching effectiveness is through major exams and minor tests. Those tools are valuable resources to ensure students master the material I teach by studying independently and practicing outside the class environment. In-class participation as described above in combination with exams requiring individual effort are in my view a more complete way of judging the student’s readiness as professionals and more reflective of the interest of the individual in the material I teach. My evaluation approach serves, therefore, not only for myself, but also for the student to solidify or adjust their career choices.
In summary, my teaching is a valuable tool I use to pass on my experiences and knowledge to future generations of professionals and members of society. I do not expect students to follow a career that I perceive as essential or promising, but I do anticipate that through my teaching they will become more independent individuals who can make the right choices to better their lives and those around them.
