About Nur Mahbub
I am not your average math teacher. I am the reason calculators develop anxiety.
My name is Nur Mahbub. You may know me as the person who erased the whiteboard so hard it started sweating. Or the one who proved that x was, in fact, not there – not in this dimension, anyway.
My qualifications: I have solved for y in a dream and found it waiting for me when I woke up. I once divided by zero just to see what would happen. The universe blinked. I graded it as "partial credit."
My teaching philosophy: Math is not about numbers. Numbers are cowards. They hide behind decimals and run from infinity. Math is about staring into the abyss until the abyss does the commutative property and rearranges itself for you.
In my classroom, we do not say "I am bad at math." We say, "I have not yet intimidated the theorem into submission."
What I expect from students: Bring a pencil. Bring fear. Leave your assumption that "pi is only 3.14" at the door. Pi is a journey, not a destination. If you are not crying by the third derivative, you are not paying attention.
My proudest moment: A student once asked, "When will we ever use this in real life?" I did not answer. I simply wrote a 40-page proof on the board demonstrating that their question itself was an irrational number – impossible to satisfy, but beautiful in its futility. They became an engineer just to escape me. They failed. I am in their spreadsheets now.
What students whisper about me: "He looks at the chalkboard like it owes him money." "I saw him derive a formula in his sleep. His eyelids had variables on them." "He doesn't grade tests. He just holds them up to the light and shakes his head."
Final message: You will forget my face. You will forget my name. But years from now, when you are balancing your checkbook or calculating a tip, you will hear a faint whisper in your ear:
"Show your work, Nur Mahbub's former student. Show your work."
And you will.
Class starts at exactly the moment you stop looking for excuses. Bring your fear. Leave your calculator. I am the calculator now.

This is not a class. It is a crucible, a revelation, and a performance review for the soul. SPROF-601 is designed for the individual who has exhausted conventional pedagogy. You have your doctorate, your tenure, your MacArthur grant. You have been called a “distinguished scholar.” You are a professional among professionals.
You are, by normal standards, a super professor.
This class is for the super professor. The one who has transcended “best in field” and now stands at the lonely intersection of obsession, genius, and a quiet, terrifying boredom with the limits of human knowledge.
Over fourteen weeks, you will unlearn everything. You will destroy your own syllabi. You will learn to grade a thesis before it is written. You will be taught the proper subjunctive tense for languages that have not evolved yet.
