About Gary
In 1962 one of my friends told me he was going to start to play guitar. He said he wanted to learn how to play because all the girls liked guys who played guitar. I said: “That sounds like a great idea because I don’t have a girlfriend.” So I started taking lessons at the same music store my friend did. He quit lessons and I continued. I was hooked. My love affair with the guitar began.
I kept practicing and kept taking lessons for about a year. At that time, my guitar teacher had quit the store and a new teacher started. I did not like the new guy. So, I quit. I had already gotten to the point where I could figure songs out by myself. I probably was not very good. But I still kept practicing every day. This went on through my sophomore year in high school. When I started my junior year in high school, I was sitting next to a guy who had guitars drawn on his notebook. I had guitars drawn on my notebook too. I asked him if he played guitar. He told me he did. He was taking lessons at a store that competed with the one I where I took lessons. In short, we hooked up and started a basement band with a drummer friend of his.
My friend and I would sit in his bedroom and figure out songs from the records. Then we would go down in his basement with the drummer and play them together. In a short time, we thought we sounded pretty good. We decided to see if we could get some band jobs.
That was the baby boomer generation. All the playgrounds in the Twin City Metro Area had teen centers to keep the boomers off the streets. We got a job at one of those playgrounds after learning a list of about twenty songs. We made a total of around $30/gig for the three of us. We did surf music and instrumentals because we could not sing and play at the same time. After while we got better and started singing. We decided we needed a bass player. We found another classmate who played bass. He joined our band and we were off and running. We started playing teen clubs all over the St. Paul, MN area.
As we got better, we started playing High School dances and our local YMCA. We also kept working the playground circuit. We were gigging almost every weekend. We were doing Beatle songs, songs from the British bands and Folk Rock from the California bands.
We really grew to be good performers and very professional. We were kind of perfectionists and learned as much as we could to sound just like the recordings. We did not make the “big time” but we had fun. I went to college and started playing in bar bands. I also started a few other bands and worked as a sideman in various other genres of music.

I have a great deal of life experience. I like to use real-world analogies to help students understand. My goal is to make learning the guitar fun. I have a significant number of pre-printed handouts so I can save time during the lesson. I have taught children to senior citizens. I have a wide variety of student handouts that span from basic music theory to more advanced. If a student wants to learn to read music and understand music theory, I can do that. If a student prefers learning songs and guitar solos, I can do that. The possibilities for learning are wide open.

I offer lesson packages when paid in advance. I find a student is more committed if they feel they already paid for a group of lessons. Pay for 4 lessons in advance and you will receive 5. Pay for 8 lessons in advance and you will receive 10. I expect notification for missed lessons. If no notification is received the cost of that lesson will be deducted from the lesson package. Or, if paid by one lesson at a time, they will be billed for the cost of the missed lesson
