I like to first build a strong foundation for my students and slowly introduce more difficult concepts as they become more confident. With my GCSE maths students i started by teaching basic concepts which they should have already learned but they weren't why the concepts or methods worked but were asked to just adopt them, However i helped them to think differently about the concepts by helping them understand why the methods work.
