About Simon
Physics has been a lifelong passion of mine, and after 27 years in education I still genuinely enjoy learning, discussing and exploring the subject every day.
I hold a BSc (Hons) in Physics with Astrophysics, a PGCE in Secondary Science Education, and an MSc in Astrophysics (Distinction). During my career I have taught students across the full age and ability range. I spent 16 years in secondary education teaching Key Stage 3 Science, GCSE Biology, Chemistry and Physics, as well as A-Level Physics, before working for three and a half years in a primary school. That experience gave me a deeper understanding of how students learn and develop, while also helping me refine my ability to explain complex scientific and mathematical ideas in clear, accessible ways.
Since 2020, I have been teaching at a sixth form college, specialising in A-Level Physics, BTEC Science and GCSE resit Physics. Working exclusively with post-16 students has allowed me to further develop my subject knowledge and teaching expertise, helping students consistently achieve results above benchmark expectations year after year. It has also given me a detailed understanding of the challenges students face when making the transition from GCSE to A-Level and from sixth form to university.
What I love most about teaching is helping students develop the confidence to tackle difficult ideas independently. Physics is not about memorising facts. It is about understanding patterns, solving problems and making sense of how the universe works. I believe every student can improve their understanding when they are given the right support, encouragement and strategy.
My enthusiasm for physics extends well beyond the classroom. I am always looking to deepen my own understanding of the subject, whether through reading, studying or exploring new ideas. In fact, I even persuaded my family to spend a holiday in Spain so I could experience my first total solar eclipse, an unforgettable reminder of why I fell in love with physics in the first place.
If you are looking for an enthusiastic and experienced tutor who will support, challenge and inspire you, helping you achieve excellent results while developing the independent learning skills needed for university and beyond, I would be delighted to help you on your journey.

Starting A-Level Physics can be challenging, especially when the jump from GCSE to A-Level demands a deeper understanding and more independent thinking. My lessons provide a clear, structured approach for Year 12 and Year 13 students, helping them build confidence and develop the skills needed for both exam success and university study.
We begin by ensuring a strong understanding of the core concepts before moving on to exam-style questions. I model how experienced physicists approach problems, demonstrating effective methods for tackling calculations, explanations and unfamiliar situations. Using past paper questions, we identify strengths, misconceptions and gaps in understanding.
Students then practise a range of question styles while learning how to analyse their own mistakes. Rather than simply correcting answers, I coach students to understand why mistakes occur and develop strategies to avoid them in the future. This might involve addressing conceptual misunderstandings, improving mathematical techniques, refining exam technique or developing more effective study habits.
My goal is not only to help students achieve excellent grades, but also to develop the independence, resilience and problem-solving skills needed to thrive at university and beyond. By learning how to learn effectively, students leave my lessons as more confident and capable physicists.
