About Guy

I'm a Durham University law student heading into my third year near the top of a cohort of around 400, though most of who I am has been shaped as much by sport and helping people as by grades.

I grew up in Devon and partly in Qatar, held three scholarships at Blundell's, and captained football there and now at university.

These days I mentor first-year students on their essays and applications, and what I enjoy most is taking something that feels overwhelming and making it clear and a lot less daunting. I'm patient, easy to work with, and I genuinely care how you get on.

About the lesson

I help GCSE and A-Level students in both English Literature and English Language build the skills that actually move marks. I achieved grade 9s and A*s in these subjects, and having sat these exams not long ago myself, I understand the current demands and exactly what examiners reward, as well as where students throw away easy marks.

My lessons focus on technique, not just content. Most students already know the texts. What holds them back is analysis, structure, and answering the question actually in front of them. So I teach you how to analyse language and form rather than simply describe them, how to build a clear argument, how to approach unseen poetry and prose with confidence, and how to plan and time an essay so you finish strong under pressure. Everything is mapped to the mark scheme, so you always understand why a response earns the grade it does rather than guessing.

I also tailor every session to the individual. I start by pinning down the specific things costing you marks, then we target them directly, so no time is wasted on what you already do well. I keep things clear and genuinely engaging, because students learn far faster when they're enjoying the work and watching their confidence grow. I get on easily with younger students and know how to make even dense or intimidating texts feel approachable.

The aim is simple: sharper writing and the grade you're capable of, with the confidence to back it up. Whether you're chasing a 9, an A*, or you just want English to stop feeling like a guessing game, I'll help you get there.
