About Andy
I'm a senior at Berea College studying Peace and Social Justice. I tutor U.S. history, world history, and American government and civics, along with the writing that goes with them — thesis statements, source citation, and getting an argument to hold together across a whole essay. I work with middle and high school students, including AP-level coursework / at the general and honors level.
My background is in policy research. I spent a summer interning at the Kentucky Center for Economic Policy, where I studied the state and local governments and how they addressed economic issues. That work is the reason I don't teach government as a list of branches and vetoes. When a student asks why any of these matters, I can point at something happening in Frankfort this month.
I'm also a NASPA Certified Peer Educator, which is training in how to teach people your own age without lecturing at them — asking better questions, catching the moment someone has quietly stopped following. I've held the same campus job for four years and was promoted in it, so I show up when I say I will.
I'm best with students who've decided they're bad at history, and with students who write well in conversation but freeze on the page. Both of those are usually structure problems, not ability problems, and structure is teachable.

Every plan combines what parents and teachers want with what your student is actually interested in. I'm glad to go beyond the session itself — practice work between meetings, quick questions by message. We'll build the plan together in the first session, and if it needs to change later, I'll check with you first.
