About Eliza

I am a violin tutor with over 8 years of teaching experience and hold a Bachelor of Music in Early Music (Baroque Violin). My passion lies in exploring the richness of folk traditions, particularly Irish, Scottish, and American Old-Time styles. These traditions bring the violin to life with ornamentation, rhythmic bowing, and expressive storytelling through sound. In my teaching, I focus on ear-based learning to help students connect more naturally with the music. We work on ornaments, phrasing, and rhythm in ways that make folk playing both lively and authentic. Repertoire is at the heart of my lessons, allowing students to learn technique while building a personal library of tunes. I often use folk jam tracks to give students the feel of playing in a real session. Drone tuners are another tool I use to strengthen intonation and encourage deep listening. These methods make lessons engaging, hands-on, and closely tied to the traditions themselves. Whether you’re just beginning or building on past experience, my goal is to make learning the violin both fun and meaningful. Together, we’ll explore vibrant cultural sounds and bring these traditions to life through your playing.

About the lesson

My violin teaching approach is built on curiosity, experimentation, and self-guided discovery. I encourage students to explore sound, texture, and tone through playful activities like musical games and sound exploration. Improvisation exercises help learners find their own musical voice while developing confidence. I also focus on ear–eye coordination, guiding students to match what they hear with what they see and play.

In lessons, we explore the natural resonance of open strings, showing how the violin vibrates and sings when played with awareness. Fingerboard mapping is introduced as an adventurous journey, helping students visualize notes as landmarks rather than memorized patterns. Listening skills are central, as they deepen both technical accuracy and emotional connection.

Some students thrive on independent discovery, and I provide space for them to test, question, and shape their own interpretations. Others respond to building a strong emotional bond with the instrument, which I support through expressive playing and mindful listening. For those who value precise technique, I balance structured exercises with opportunities for creativity. Learners who enjoy expressing themselves freely are encouraged to blend improvisation with technical growth.

By combining discipline with play, and structure with imagination, I create lessons where each student can grow in their own unique way. My goal is to help every learner not only master the violin, but also develop a lasting passion for music.
