About Sharvani
I’m a violin tutor with over ten years of teaching experience and a **Bachelor of Music in Early Music (Baroque Violin)**, and my passion lies in sharing the beauty of folk traditions. My expertise spans **Irish, Scottish, American Old-Time**, and other vibrant fiddle styles, giving students a chance to explore music that’s deeply rooted in culture. I love introducing learners to the art of **ornamentation**, from delicate rolls and cuts to slides that bring folk tunes to life. In lessons, we focus on **rhythmic bowing patterns** that drive the pulse of reels, jigs, and waltzes, helping students feel the music in their bones. I also emphasise **ear-based learning**, training students to trust their listening skills and internalise melodies without relying solely on sheet music. To make practice engaging, I use **folk jam tracks**, **drone tuners**, and **repertoire-based instruction** that keeps each session fresh and musically rewarding. I’ve worked with complete beginners, advancing players, and even classical violinists curious about folk traditions. My approach to violin teaching centres on **physical awareness, mental focus, and musical flow**, helping students play with both ease and expression. We start by exploring **breathing while playing**, using calm, steady breaths to release tension and connect movement to music. I guide students towards a **relaxed left-hand technique** and natural posture, so fingers move freely and without strain. Smooth, controlled bowing becomes a cornerstone, with exercises that teach balance, weight, and graceful motion across the strings. We also work on **visualising music patterns**—seeing shapes, intervals, and phrasing in the mind before the bow touches the string. This imaginative learning makes practice feel more like creating than drilling. Healthy practice habits are encouraged early, blending short, focused sessions with rest and mindful warm-ups to **prevent injury and build confidence**. Every student’s needs are different. Some thrive when there’s emotional safety, others when physical ease is emphasised, and some need strong **goal-setting** to stay inspired. I meet each learner where they are, supporting progress with kindness and structure. Ultimately, I aim to help students not just play notes, but **feel the music flow through them**.
