About Darren

Darren Wells is a Sydney-based artist specialising in portraiture, working primarily in graphite and charcoal. His portraits embrace an art style of visible process and imperfection - a belief that every mark, like every face, tells a story.

Darren has a Bachelor of Arts and also has a background in writing and communication, with years of experience working across magazines, content agencies and event curation.

In 2025 Darren appeared in ABC's Portrait Artist of the Year.

About the lesson

Frustrated with how daunting the art journey can be? Let's take things back to basics with an approachable look at creating portraits.

I focus on the foundations that matter: not just proportions and shading and expressive mark-making, but the mindset that can help bring you back to the page each time. I'll teach you through every step of the way - from how to get the most out of your materials, to technique and control, right through to how to build confidence, develop your artistic style, and bring your portraits to life.

Got a reference you'd love to draw? Great! We'll look at how to translate it to the page in graphite or charcoal, and work towards creating a finished piece you can be proud of, giving you the skills to go forth and create even more art.

Whether you're exploring drawing for the first time or looking to refine your skills, I'll help you find your way. Let me help you share your art's story with the world.
