About Jonathan

My academic background is IT, and after working as a web developer and as a systems analyst for over 2 years in Brazil, I decided to go to Australia. When I arrived on the other side of the Pacific, I started working in the hospitality industry, as a barista, in order to improve my communication skills.

After a couple of months I realized that I enjoy dealing with people, and as a consequence of working in several coffee shops in Sydney, I dealt with customers from all over the world, such as: Australians, British, Russians, Indians, New Zealanders, Japanese, Koreans, Chinese, French, Germans, and others. This experience not only strengthened my communication skills but also sharpened my listening to understand a wide range of accents.

I didn't return to the prominent IT industry, I ended up working 6 years with hospitality and during this period I also studied Business Administration at the Australian Academy of Commerce. When I returned to Brazil in 2019, I received many English lessons requests due to all my experiences with the language. I've been receiving great feedback from my students since then so I signed up to this platform to reach and help more people with the English language.

I believe it's also worth mentioning that during my last year in Australia I started to write a YA fantasy fiction novel, in English. At the moment I have 3 chapters (that's 42 pages) fully written and revised, a project that complements nicely my work as an English teacher!

About the lesson

Hey there! My name is Jonathan, I'm a Brazilian/British citizen who lived 7 years overseas (England and Australia). I've been an English teacher for 2 years now and I'm happy to tell you that during this period I've transformed some people's lives for better as their English improved significantly. I'm in contact with the English language from a very young age, and you may ask "how young?" and, well.. I learnt to say "thank you" before "obrigado".

About the classes, first I do an experimental class/interview with the student to find out some of their weaknesses and strengths with the language. After defining that I know how I'll start teaching and how I'll prepare the lessons, and to make the classes more interesting I usually try to bring materials related to subjects of the student's interest. I use the latest Oxford textbooks as guides in order to have a direction to where we're going with the studies (there are 6 modules in total) but the classes are customized. I use several resources as support materials, such as interviews, reports and news to work on what some people call it as "the real English", which consists of not only videos and audios of the spoken English at normal speed, full of vocabulary reductions, but also materials related to the everyday writing, such as articles from newspapers and magazines.
