About THOMAS
My approach starts with a recording rather than the drum kit. Most drummers assume their timing problem lives in their hands, but when we listen back it is usually in one specific place: the hi-hat under the snare, the bar just before a fill, the first bar after a loud section. In a first lesson I will often have you play a simple beat to a click for a minute and record it on your phone. Then we listen together and mark where the time pulls ahead or drags. You learn to hear your own drift before anyone points it out, and that is the skill I care most about building. For a complete beginner, that might be a single quarter note on the snare, listened to closely for evenness. For someone who has been playing a long time, it might be a groove they were sure was steady until they heard it back.
When something falls apart, I want to know exactly when it happens. "The fill is messy" does not help much. "The third stroke of the left-hand triplet arrives late once the tempo passes a certain point" does. So I often change the problem instead of repeating it. If a fill collapses, I might play it with the hi-hat on quarter notes, then with only the kick, to find which limb is dragging the others off the beat. If a roll sounds uneven, I will have you play it at three stick heights and listen for which one sounds most even, and then we talk about why the lower stroke is usually the one you can trust under pressure. Sometimes the fix is to take the kick out of a groove for a bar and let the snare and hi-hat carry the time, then rebuild the kick on top of that steady foundation.
I explain things through what the body and the ear are doing, not through a pile of terminology. Independence is a good example. Telling someone to "be independent" does nothing useful, so I would rather have you keep the right hand on the ride and tap your left foot on beats two and four, then add one hand note at a time while you say out loud which limb you feel wanting to speed up. For a child, that might be a game with a practice pad and a timer, with the goal of keeping the pulse still while the sticks move. For an adult with limited practice time, it might be ten focused minutes a day with headphones, where the aim is one clean change per session. For a teenager learning a song they love, we would take the real drum part, strip it down to its groove, and then put the parts back one at a time so the song never fully disappears. Ghost notes work the same way: play them so quietly that a listener nearly misses them. If the backbeat is loud enough to hear through them, the stroke is too heavy.
If an explanation does not land, I change the route. I might demonstrate instead of describing, compare the motion to something familiar like a door swinging closed or a heartbeat settling, or drop to the simplest version of the idea and build back up from there. I am less interested in you copying my sound than in you being able to tell, on your own, what is working and what is not. Over time I want you to leave each lesson with a clear sense of what to check in your next practice session: where your time tends to pull, which limb is weakest, and which transition you have been quietly avoiding. As that becomes second nature, the lessons shift from me diagnosing your playing to you doing most of the diagnosis yourself. Whether you are coming back to the kit after years away, learning your first fill, or preparing a difficult passage for a band, you will sit down at the drums knowing what to listen for.

I learn drums mostly by ear and by hand, so my lessons start with what you can hear and feel in a groove before we talk about what to write down. Many drummers arrive knowing a few beats that they can play as long as nothing goes wrong. Maybe the kick and snare hold together at a slow tempo, then the hi-hat falls apart the moment you add a fill, or your left hand starts to rush when you try to play ghost notes. I have a habit of stopping a student right there and asking them to play only the hi-hat, or only the kick, with the rest of the kit silent. Once the single limb is steady, we bring the other back in one piece at a time. Often the problem turns out to be that two limbs were never really independent, only taking turns, and the fix is to slow the whole pattern down until each part can keep its own time without the others pulling it off course.
Coordination is where I spend much of my attention, because it is the part of drumming that is hardest to see from the outside. If you are stuck on a sixteenth-note pattern that keeps tripping over itself, I will often change the rhythm before I change the tempo. We might play the same notes as dotted figures, or as triplets, or with an accent moved to a different beat, so the weak spot shows up clearly. A stumble that was invisible at full speed becomes obvious when the pattern is shaped differently, and that tells us exactly where the hands or feet are not yet confident. Then we go back to the original version with a clearer target. I use the same idea with reading. If a student can read a simple chart but loses the place as soon as a bar of rests comes along, we practice counting the rests out loud and feeling the silence, rather than simply playing the same page again and hoping it sorts itself out.
Beginners and returning drummers get the same care, just aimed at different things. Someone who has never sat behind a kit will start with a single basic groove and learn how to hold the sticks loosely enough that the rebound does the work, rather than tightening up and fighting every stroke. Someone coming back after years away will usually have strong instincts and some rust, so we rebuild the foundations quickly and then move to real songs they already love. Children often respond best when the lesson is a game with clear rules, such as trading phrases back and forth with me or building a beat that changes every four bars. Teenagers and adults frequently want to play along to records, and that is a good place to work, because a song gives the rhythm a reason to matter. Whatever the starting point, I want you to leave each lesson able to hear what went wrong and to know the next small thing to try, so that you are not dependent on me to tell you every time.
Practice away from the kit matters as much as time spent behind it. I usually give students a short routine to take home, built around the one or two problems we found that day, and I ask them to keep a note of what felt different when the pattern worked. Over several weeks that note becomes a record of how your own playing changes, which is far more useful than a list of songs learned. My aim is for you to become a drummer who can take a new groove, figure out where it is hard, and build a way through it on your own. Lessons can be arranged around the drums you have, whether that is a full acoustic kit, an electronic one, or a practice pad and a pair of sticks while you figure out your space.
