About Shabab
I am an Associate Professor and research scientist with extensive academic, research and teaching experience in Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Microbiology and related life sciences.
My academic and research journey has taken me through some of the world’s leading scientific institutions. I completed my PhD in Biotechnology through a joint program involving the Max Planck Institute for Plant Breeding Research in Cologne, Germany and the National Chemical Laboratory, Pune. I subsequently worked as a Humboldt Fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology in Germany and spent several years as a Research Scientist in the Department of Biology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA. I have also worked as a Scientist II at Takeda Pharmaceuticals in Cambridge, USA.
Currently, I am an Associate Professor at Ajeenkya D Y Patil University, Pune, where I teach undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Biotechnology and Biochemistry while continuing my research.
My research focuses on host-microbe interactions, antimicrobial peptides, molecular and biochemical approaches, and developing innovative solutions in biological sciences. I am also an inventor of an approved patent for an AI-assisted microfluidic device for rapid antimicrobial susceptibility testing, reflecting my interest in translating scientific research into practical applications.
My teaching philosophy is to make complex biological concepts understandable, logical and interesting. Rather than encouraging students to memorize information, I focus on conceptual clarity, scientific reasoning and real-world applications.
I have mentored students at all levels and have experience designing and teaching advanced scientific courses.

My classes are designed for students who want more than textbook-based learning. I teach Biology, Microbiology, Biotechnology and Biochemistry with an emphasis on conceptual understanding, scientific reasoning and real-world applications.
Each class is adapted to the student's academic level, syllabus and learning objectives. I begin by understanding the student's current level and areas of difficulty, and then build concepts progressively from fundamentals to advanced topics.
My teaching approach combines clear explanations, examples, diagrams, discussion and research-based insights. Where appropriate, I connect classroom concepts with real scientific discoveries, laboratory research and applications in biotechnology, medicine, pharmaceuticals and biological sciences.
For university and postgraduate students, classes can be tailored towards examinations, assignments, presentations, research projects or strengthening subject fundamentals. Students interested in pursuing research can also benefit from my experience at MIT, the Max Planck Institutes and the pharmaceutical industry.
My objective is not just to help students score better, but to help them genuinely understand the subject, become confident in discussing scientific concepts and develop curiosity towards biological sciences.
