  • 1) Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

I speak Korean fluently because of my origins; it is my native language. Growing up in a Korean-speaking household allowed me to experience the richness of the language daily, and this cultural immersion shaped my identity. Over time, my passion for the language deepened as I observed how Korean connects people globally, thanks to its growing influence in entertainment, technology, and academia.
  • 2) Can you name a living, historical, or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

King Sejong the Great is the most emblematic figure in Korean culture. He is celebrated for creating Hangeul, the Korean alphabet, in the 15th century. His vision of promoting literacy among common people and breaking down barriers to communication embodies the inclusive and progressive spirit of Korean culture. Without him, Korean would not have its unique linguistic identity.
  • 3) Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition, or behavior in the language that you particularly like?

One word I find particularly meaningful is 우리 (uri), which translates to "we" or "our." Unlike in English, 우리 is often used in Korean to emphasize collectivism and shared identity. For instance, instead of saying "my house" (나의 집), Koreans commonly say 우리 집 ("our house"), even when referring to something personally owned. This reflects the deep sense of community and inclusivity ingrained in Korean culture. The word highlights how relationships and connections take precedence over individualism in daily life.
  • 4) Why does speaking this language matter to you?

Speaking Korean matters to me because it's a direct link to my heritage, history, and family. It also allows me to share my culture with others, helping them understand the subtleties and depth of Korean identity. Moreover, as Korean culture becomes increasingly influential globally, being fluent in Korean allows me to act as a bridge between cultures, fostering understanding and appreciation.
  • 5) What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

One of the main challenges in learning Korean is navigating its extensive vocabulary and expressions that reflect intricate social hierarchies and contexts. Korean has a highly developed system of honorifics and speech levels, which change depending on the relationship, status, and level of familiarity between speakers. For example, there are multiple ways to say "thank you" or "hello," each suited to a specific social situation. This detailed system can feel overwhelming at first, but it becomes manageable through consistent practice, exposure to native speakers, and paying attention to context in Korean dramas, conversations, or lessons.
  • 6) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

I remember helping a classmate in college who was struggling with Korean phonetics. We practiced together, and when he finally pronounced "안녕하세요" (Annyeonghaseyo) perfectly, he beamed with pride. It was a small yet meaningful reminder of how much joy language learning can bring and how much it can connect people from different walks of life.
  • 7) How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

Visiting historical sites like Gyeongbokgung Palace and Bukchon Hanok Village helped deepen my appreciation for Korean culture and language. Immersing myself in these environments allowed me to see how traditional and modern elements coexist in Korea, enriching my teaching with cultural context. Observing how language evolves in real-life situations, from markets to museums, was invaluable.
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof in language?

What makes me a Superprof is my ability to tailor lessons to each student's unique needs and goals. I combine cultural insights, engaging activities, and structured learning methods to make the process enjoyable and effective. My passion for Korean language and culture, coupled with patience and dedication, ensures that my students feel supported and inspired in their journey to fluency.
