About Memory

I was born and raised in South Korea and have lived in Los Angeles for over twenty years, so I move between the two languages and cultures every day. That in-between vantage is the heart of how I teach.

By profession I'm a writer. I've worked as a film correspondent and a cultural columnist, and I hold an MFA in Film Production and a BA in Aesthetics. Years of writing for readers have made me precise about language: how a sentence carries feeling, why one word lands and another doesn't. That is exactly the sensitivity I bring to teaching Korean.

I believe language learning should feel like understanding a culture from the inside, not memorizing rules in isolation. My students learn to hear what a line of dialogue or a lyric is really saying, including the part left unspoken.

Above all, I take this work seriously. I prepare for each student, adapt to your level and goals, and keep our lessons focused, warm, and genuinely useful. Whether you're beginning or already advanced, you'll find a patient teacher who listens closely and meets you where you are.

About the lesson

My lessons begin with something you already love. A scene from a drama, a song stuck in your head, a film you've watched three times. That becomes our text.

A typical lesson works in layers. We take a short piece, a few lines of dialogue or lyrics, and start with what it literally says. Then we go underneath: why that line lands the way it does, what a Korean listener hears that a dictionary won't tell you, the cultural weight behind a single word. Grammar and vocabulary come out of that naturally, anchored to something you care about rather than a worksheet. We finish with you using it yourself, out loud, in your own words.

What sets me apart is where I come from. I'm a writer, a former film correspondent and cultural columnist, with an MFA in Film Production and a BA in Aesthetics. Korea is my origin; Los Angeles has been home for over twenty years, so I read both cultures through two sets of eyes at once. I don't just translate the feeling in a Korean line. I can show you how it's built.

Lessons are for any level, from complete beginners to advanced speakers who want real depth and nuance. They suit people drawn to Korean through K-drama, K-pop, or cinema, who want to understand the emotion beneath the words, not only what they mean. We shape everything around your level and what pulled you toward Korean in the first place.
