About Darren
Meet Darren... When asked to describe his approach to set portrait photography, Darren said, "I'm pragmatic. Shoot, move, communicate. Improvise, adapt, innovate. Leave only footprints. Insert metadata, upload. Repeat." Based out of Los Angeles, California, award-winning unit and portrait photographer Darren Michaels has created the scene coverage, BTS, and marketing photography for over 80 major motion picture feature films and 70 television series. Having photographed a ''who's who'' of Hollywood's A-list, his iconic images from the insider perspective have been published around the world in every medium. Raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Darren graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Photography from the Roy Park School of Communications at Ithaca College. He then became a sought-after Photographer's Assistant in New York City culminating in an assignment as 1st Assistant on Sports Illustrated's Swimsuit Issue, but soon after made it out to the West Coast where he resettled in Hollywood and established his own shop. Darren says he enjoys the collaborative process and has previously worked closely with auteur directors Quentin Tarantino (Jackie Brown); Danny Boyle (A Life Less Ordinary); Adrian Lyne (Lolita); three films for Andrew Niccol (Gattaca, Simone, Lord of War); four films with Kevin Smith (Dogma, Clerks II, Zack & Miri, Yoga Hosers); as well as the Charlie's Angels and Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle films for McG, and Mr. Church for Bruce Beresford. A repeat favorite of those who know his work, Darren has photographed five films with actress Cameron Diaz including her first, The Mask; five films with Ben Affleck; and eight films with Drew Barrymore including 50 First Dates and her directorial debut, Whip It. In addition to feature narrative and single-camera productions, Darren is equally effective in episodic dramas (52 episodes of Major Crimes) and multi-camera comedies (50 episodes of 2 Broke Girls, 52 episodes of Childrens Hospital), and has worked extensively on projects for the 'King of Sit-coms', television producer Chuck Lorre (40 episodes of Mom and numerous episodes of Two and a Half Men, Mike and Molly, The Big Bang Theory, Disjointed, The Kominsky Method and Young Sheldon). Recently, Darren completed the new series Murdertown (NETFLIX), two features (for Amazon) I Love America, and All The Old Knives, and is most recently worked on the new feature film, Poolman. Darren is a long-standing member of The Society of Motion Picture Still Photographers (SMPSP) as well as the IATSE Local 600 Cinematographers Guild, and works worldwide for unit still photography, advertising, editorial, publicity, and private portrait commissions.

Great Photographer! Awesome teacher.
Darren was great! He helped me get squared away with my new camera in an hour over a skype video chat. Without his help, I never would have figured out all these buttons. Saved me a lot of hassle before I went on my vacation. Highly recommend!
When I first saw Darren’s website, I was really intimidated to have him has a tutor. I live in San Francisco but flew down for almost a week because I authentically NEED to learn and when would it be possible to be tutored by him!?! Anyways, after day 4 I can honestly say I am proficient enough that it’s possible no one on a set may be able to tell that this is a result of a one on one ‘masterclass.’ I can’t recommend Darren enough. He has pretty much photographed literally every Academy Award winning actor on sets. This was an opportunity of a lifetime that I will never forget and always feel indebted to Darren for.
I spent the big bucks on a Sony camera and quickly realized I was in way over my head. Darren talked me off the ledge and before long I was not afraid of my Sony any more. He is smart, funny, relatable, probably (no, certainly) has forgotten more about photography than I will ever know, but I especially appreciate that Darren uses language I can understand, and was patient with me throughout my lesson. Would not hesitate to contact him again! Thanks D!
Darren has a great eye, and has a lifetime of experience. I highly recommend him without hesitancy.
