About Genevieve
My teaching approach is centred on the individual student, combining strong technical foundations with creativity, curiosity, and the complete fun of music-making. I tailor each lesson and journey to suit the student’s goals, whether that is building confidence as a beginner (adult or child), preparing for ABRSM exams, psychological preparation for auditions, or developing a more advanced artistic voice. I am also very interested in working with and supporting the unique and powerful minds of neurodivergent students, as a proud ADHD musician myself.

Hello! My name is Genevieve and I’m a professional cellist and teacher. I currently teach both cello and chamber music at the Junior department of the Royal Academy of Music. I've previously taught at Alleyn’s School, Dulwich College, South London Youth Orchestra and Musicworks (a course for young chamber musicians.) I have also taught extensively across Italy, Germany, Switzerland and the UK, and have coached ensembles including the cello section for the German youth orchestra, Neue Philharmonie München.
Highlights from my performance career include La Scala, Milan; Royal Opera House, Muscat, Oman; Elgar Room, Royal Albert Hall; Royal Festival Hall; Queen Elizabeth Hall; Mantova Chamber Music Festival, Italy; Lake District Summer Music Festival, UK; Chilingirian Mozart Festival, UK with artists including Tokyo Ballet; Bolshoi Ballet; Zubin Mehta; Woody Allen; Roberto Bolle; Manfred Honeck and Iván Fischer.
I studied at the Royal College of Music with Melissa Phelps graduating in 2013 with first class honours. In 2016, I completed my Masters at the Conservatorio della Svizzera Italiana, Lugano, Switzerland studying with both Johannes Goritzki and Monika Leskovar, graduating with distinction. In 2019, I subsequently completed one year of intensive study with Natalia Gutman and Elizabeth Wilson at the Scuola di Musica Fiesole, Florence.
Recommendations
Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the tutor.
I have known Genevieve both personally and professionally for some time, and I deeply appreciate her exceptional knowledge, professional integrity, and genuine humanity in the teaching process.
Having had the pleasure of attending her performance classes at the Royal Academy of Music on several occasions, I have been consistently impressed by her grounded, encouraging presence and her remarkable ability to attune to each individual student.
She brings a wealth of experience and an outstanding professional background, but what truly distinguishes her is her pure and evident love for the craft - something that resonates deeply and has a lasting impact on her students.
I would wholeheartedly recommend Genevieve to anyone seeking a dedicated and inspiring cello teacher! It’s with great pleasure I write this. Genevieve is a brilliant cello teacher. She understands children well, and knows how to get the very best from them, in both individual and group settings. My son has progressed tremendously and beyond my expectations in the last 2 years. His trio all requested her to teach them for a second year. She has turned around the playing of another friend’s child in under a year. I recommend her highly without reserve.
Genevieve is a insightful and engaging teacher to work with. From learning chamber music with her, I have learnt so much and she has also been a very supportive and exciting teacher to work with. Her energy is infectious and makes me want to come to my lesson each week.
From a solo point of view, her feedback from performance lessons has always been constructive and she has invited me to explore new ideas within pieces.I recently had the opportunity to observe one of Genevieve’s performance classes at the Junior Royal Academy of Music, and I was very impressed by the approach and energy. Genevieve was incredibly engaging, creating a supportive and encouraging atmosphere that made students feel comfortable and confident to perform.
As someone who graduated from musical class back in time I can confidently say it was a pleasure to watch such a well-led class - Genevieve brings both professionalism and warmth, making the learning experience both effective and inspiring.Genevieve is a not only a fantastic cello teacher but she possesses the rare ability to make a student feel confident and safe.
Genevieve is highly intelligent and knowledgeable with international experience as a cellist but she wears it lightly and is therefore great fun as a teacher while also being rigorous and very detailed in her approach.
She has taught my daughter in various different musical contexts over the past two years and has helped her hugely with sight reading and chamber ensemble music playing as well as giving her the courage to take risks.
My daughter adores Genevieve and we could not recommend her more highly!View more recommendations

I offer a free 15-minute video call before your first lesson, so we can chat about your (or your child's) goals, ambitions, appropriate lesson length and get to know each other a little. I believe learning an instrument is a very personal, interactive and rewarding journey, so I usually prefer to teach in person where possible. I’m always happy to be flexible and offer online lessons if that works better for you.
