About Celine
I am a guitar tutor with 11 years of teaching experience and a Master of Music in Jazz Performance with Guitar. I have taught over 480 students and I maintain a full professional performing schedule as a guitarist in multiple ensembles including a straight-ahead jazz trio, a contemporary jazz quartet, and an occasional large ensemble. My performing life is not incidental to my teaching — it is its foundation, because everything I teach I am actively practicing and discovering at the highest level available to me. I have recorded three albums of original compositions, all of which are available on streaming platforms, and several of my former students have cited these recordings as formative influences on their own musical development.

My guitar teaching has jazz harmony at its absolute center, not because I teach only jazz but because jazz harmony is the most comprehensive single vocabulary for understanding how all Western music works, and guitarists who master it become better at every style they touch. I begin harmony instruction with the concept of voice leading rather than chord shapes, because understanding how each note in a chord wants to move to the next chord transforms rhythm guitar playing from pattern-following into genuine musical thought. My approach to chord melody — the jazz guitar art of playing melody and accompaniment simultaneously — is introduced earlier than most teachers attempt it because the concept itself is so motivating that students develop technical capability faster to access it. Bebop lines are taught using a vocabulary method: I give students a bank of proven melodic cells from the bebop tradition and teach them to connect, develop, and personalize these cells rather than expecting students to create lines from nothing. Comping — the jazz rhythmic accompaniment role — is taught through extensive listening analysis of recordings alongside technical instruction because the rhythmic and harmonic decisions a great accompanist makes are only learned by ear. My classical and folk students receive a translation of these harmonic principles into their own idiom — the concepts are the same even though the vocabulary and context differ. I teach the fretboard as a three-dimensional harmonic map rather than as individual scale patterns, and students in my studio can find any chord inversion, arpeggio, or scale fragment in any position rather than being dependent on open position patterns. Reading music in standard notation is required for all students in my studio because it is the universal language of Western music and any guitarist without it operates at a permanent disadvantage. Students who are composing receive specific instruction in lead sheet writing and arrangement for guitar and other instruments. My teaching aspiration is a guitarist who can sit in with any band at any standard and contribute meaningfully from the first chorus.
