Student center - Actively engaged Different strategies According to the National Reading Panel, a comprehensive literacy lesson addresses one or more of the five essential components of reading: * Phonological Awareness: The ability to hear and manipulate the sounds in spoken language. * Phonics: Understanding the relationship between letters and the sounds they represent. * Fluency: The ability to read accurately, with appropriate speed and expression. * Vocabulary: The knowledge of word meanings. * Comprehension: The ability to understand and interpret text. A good lesson often weaves these pillars together. For instance, a lesson on reading a passage might focus on a specific comprehension strategy (e.g., making inferences), but it would also implicitly require students to use their phonics, fluency, and vocabulary skills to access the text in the first place. 3. Gradual Release of Responsibility Effective literacy lessons follow a "I do, we do, you do" model, which gradually shifts the responsibility from the teacher to the student. * "I Do" (Teacher Modeling): The teacher models the skill or strategy, thinking aloud and showing students exactly how to do it. * "We Do" (Guided Practice): The teacher and students work together to practice the skill.
