About Elisa

"Teaching a language means preserving its identity."
Since childhood, foreign languages have been my greatest passion, and I am eager to share this passion with my students. From them I receive the most valuable gift — the exchange — which I return by teaching them my native language.

I nurtured this interest by studying at the Faculty of Foreign Languages and Cultures in Catania, Sicily, where I earned my degree. Later, I chose to enhance my skills by specializing in translation at UNINT University in Rome, completing a Master’s degree in Translation and Interpreting with honours.

I have been teaching Italian on Superprof for more than two years, and over the past year I have also worked as an Italian tutor in several schools.

  • Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

I am a native Italian speaker. Ever since I was a child, I have always loved studying foreign languages. One day I said to myself: "Why not try to share my passion for my mother tongue to those who would like to learn it?"
  • Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

It immediately came to my mind Sophia Loren, one of the most important actresses on the Italian film scene. A Mediterranean woman, who best represents our country, its culture, customs and traditions.
  • Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behavior in the language that you particularly like?

"Chi dorme non piglia pesci!" is a phrase that I always repeat when I need to motivate myself. The literal translation is: "He who sleeps does not catch fish!"
It basically means that you get nothing if you idle. The fisherman has to be constantly alert, therefore without getting distracted or even falling asleep, in order to reel in the fish when they bite.
  • Why does speaking this language matter to you?

It is really important for me to convey the love I feel for country and this language.
Italy is my homeland, my home, here I was born and grew up, I took my first steps, attended school and university and now I am fulfilling all my working dreams.
I would like to try to give back to this land everything it has offered me, sharing its wonders with those who would like to discover it to the full.
  • What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

Italian is as beautiful as it is complicated at times. It has many grammatical and orthographic rules that some languages do not have.
But don't worry: I always prepare PowerPoints for my students (especially beginners) in which I cover the basics of the Italian language. With a good dose of exercises, games and practice it will be "un gioco da ragazzi"! (Or, to better say "a piece of cake!").
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

I have always loved the humanities, probably also because I was lucky enough to have teachers who were able to pass on a passion for what they taught.
Can you imagine how boring it can be for a child attending primary school to have to learn spelling or grammar rules? For this reason, I remember that my teachers always adopted techniques to make it more fun!

For example, do you know the so-called 'apostrophe' ('), used in writing? Here, my teacher used to tell us that the article 'lo', in front of a word that started with a vowel, would be moved. In this way, the 'o' would be lost and the apostrophe would appear in its place (which is really shaped like a small tear!).

    How funny!
  • How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

Ever since I was a child, I have always been lucky enough to travel a lot, both outside and inside my own country.
Put simply, Italy is divided into three macro-areas: north, center and south. Each one of them has different traditions, customs and even linguistic differences, the so-called 'dialects' (sometimes it is almost impossible to understand those who speak a dialect different from that of your region, as if they were real different languages! This has always fascinated me a lot).

Italy has so much to offer, and I look forward to sharing what I know and what I am passionate about with you!
  • What makes you a Superprof in language?

I don't know if I can call myself a SuperProf (I already hope to be or become one, one day).
What I do know for sure is that I will try my best to make you fall in love with this fantastic language during the lessons. And not only through exercises or grammar (which are important, but could also be boring), but above all through interactive activities, conversation, audio-visual material, films, songs and much more!

    See you soon!
