About Tirzah

Hi!
I have been teaching 5th and 6th grade students for 3 years, but after this year, I have decided to step away from classroom teaching. I still have a passion for learning and it brings me so much joy to watch students grow. I am a fun, pink haired, tattoo covered 27 year old! I am always positive and will never let you forget how strong and capable you are of learning new or hard things. I love helping students find the ways of learning that works best for them. Everyone deserves to feel confident in their skills no matter what path they take to learning them!

About the lesson

I am a former 5th & 6th grade teacher with a lot of experience writing lesson plans. I have found that structure with a bit of flexibility tends to work the best. For example, a typical session would include
1. Fluency practice
- this could include math facts practice and foundational skills practice or review
2. Review from the session before
- I do not believe it is helpful to any student to simply learn a lesson one day and then never go over that concept again, so within my sessions I take the time to quickly review the concepts that we learned in the previous session. This is also especially helpful if the lessons we are doing build off of each other.
3. Lesson
- This is the time in a sessions where a new concept is introduced. During each lesson students will be encouraged to take notes in any way that is most helpful to them. I will teach the new concept and complete practice problems with the student.
4. Practice
- This is a time in the session for the student to practice the new concept indepenently, but I am still there to help when/if the student needs assistance.
5. Updating and assigning at home practice
- this time is where we discuss what would be the most helpful for the student to practice outside of the session & I could assign specific practice that can be completed.

This session plan is simply something to give our sessions structure, but it is not something that we have to hold firm to every time. There is flexibility within each session. If the student is not feeling confident about the lesson from a previous session than there is no reason that we cannot continue practicing that! I do not believe it is helpful for anyone to learn something and then quickly move on without making 100% sure that the student understands and feels comfortable with the concept.

I have experience teaching intermediate grade levels, but I am a licensed k-6 educator and I am fully capable of tutoring any grade level.
