About Samantha

I am a PhD-trained independent linguist and researcher with a particular interest in phonetics, phonology, language contact and linguistic analysis. My research has involved working with real language data, acoustic analysis, corpus methods and lesser-described languages, and I enjoy helping students connect linguistic theory with how language actually works.

I have experience teaching university students, including Chinese students studying in English-speaking academic environments, and understand that linguistics can sometimes feel especially challenging when both the concepts and the academic terminology are unfamiliar. I aim to explain difficult ideas clearly, patiently and from more than one angle until they make sense.

Alongside phonetics and phonology, I am comfortable teaching sociolinguistics, morphology and syntax, as well as helping students develop stronger analytical and research skills.

I particularly enjoy teaching students who are curious about language but need someone to make linguistics feel more approachable and systematic.

About the lesson

I offer one-to-one online tutoring in linguistics, tailored to what you are currently studying or finding difficult. I focus on helping students understand the reasoning behind linguistic analysis rather than simply memorising terminology.

Lessons can cover phonetics, phonology, IPA transcription, sociolinguistics, morphology and syntax. I can also support students with acoustic phonetics, Praat, and developing stronger research and analytical skills.

A typical lesson is 60 minutes and can include explanation of difficult concepts, guided practice, working through examples, or revision for upcoming assessments. I am happy to adapt lessons around your university course and individual learning goals.

I have experience teaching Chinese students and am comfortable explaining complex linguistic concepts clearly to students from different language and educational backgrounds.

My lessons are particularly suited to undergraduate and postgraduate linguistics students, speech pathology students studying phonetics and IPA, and researchers who would like guidance with acoustic phonetics or Praat.
