About Sian

As Head of Geography at a tutorial college in the West of England my professional focus was entirely on getting GCSE and A level students through their exams. Classes were small - often one-to-one - so I'm used to working in a dynamic that's very different to conventional classroom setting. Many students arrived having 'failed' first time round but invariably left with exceptional grades. Now 'semi-retired' to focus on my academic research, I'm still actively teaching in my role as specialist revision teacher for Justin Craig Education. I'm also an examiner and subject specialist for one of the three main examining boards, currently enaged with remarking and reviewing this year's GCSE and A level exams. I teach OCR, AQA, Edexcel and Eduqas (formerly WJEC) at GCSE, IGCSE and A-level. I've also familiar familiar with the International Baccalaureate system. At university level I work ask a postgraduate teaching assistant and mark first year undergraduate exam scripts. All of which brings a huge amount of experience I can pass on to my students, particularly with regard to essay writing skills and exam technique. You'd be surprised at how many students fall short of the grade their knowledge merits by answering questions incorrectly or inefficiently. For example, this year I marked an A level geography question which, for three marks, simply required three bullet-pointed sentences but many students wrote a paragraph or more. One day soon I'll write a book about it but in the meantime I'm happy to share my tips.

About the lesson

Dynamic and student-focused with a focus on subject knowledge and, importantly, exam technique. The emphasis is on engagement with both the subject and the tutor, a student who's fully immersed in the lesson with learn far more effectively. I am passionate about my subjects: I don't just teach them, I study them and I do them.
