About Laurence

I am passionate about teaching GCSE and A level English language and literature.

I have a MA from Central School of Speech and Drama, and a BA Hons in English Literature from Birmingham University.

Each lesson is tailored to the student’s needs. Easy to use exam techniques, methods to gain the most marks, ways to prepare for language and literature, guides to using context, specific words to use to up your grade, how much to write, how many quotes, essay structure plans, effective planning, key ideas to use for literature texts.

Each lesson starts with a guide for the question, going through key points and strategy, then some practise to really hone the writing skills and precise language needed for a high level answer. I give positive feedback and suggestions to improve.

I am passionate about the history of English literature, specifically Elizabethan poetry and drama, and the 19th century Gothic, Romantic and Realism. I am highly knowledge about the form of poetry from sonnets to free verse, and can explain and guide students in form and structures, which is guaranteed to raise grades.

Every day and every student is different and I love that.

I read a lot, love cinema and speak fluent French.

I also teach general English, help with essays and proofreading at post-graduate level and can also guide students with any creative writing projects.

I use past papers, the official revision guides for each exam; the Snap Revision guides and the revision cards for the main texts. I also use BBC Bitesize, the RCS website, clips from key plays and other resources to help students.

I have strategies to help with creative writing and the non-fiction writing questions. I have key study guides to assist with the unseen poetry question along with Shakespeare & the key 19th cent texts such as Dr Jekyll.
