About Daniel

A highly accomplished English teacher with twenty-five years of classroom experience, I have taught a wide range of abilities in a variety of settings, in both independent and state schools, then at international institutions more recently. Whilst I was Head of English at one of Britain’s highest achieving departments for several years, our GCSE and A Level students regularly scored within the top ten candidates nationally. As such, I specialise in helping student attain excellent grades in public examinations, ensuring they are prepared for the next stage of their education. Since 2010 I have also tutored students on a one-to-one basis, increasingly moving sessions online to adapt to the needs and preferences of current learning methods. I have successfully taught dozens of tutees ahead of their selective entrance tests (formerly the 11+), including King’s Scholars at Eton. The majority of my tutees are drawn from Years 10-13, meaning that I am very familiar with the specifications of various exam boards. My other roles within the education sector include being an examiner for IB and A Level, a teacher-training assessor and ambassador for a prominent, prestigious debating society. Seeing as I am new to 'Superprof', my reviews from previous clients on other sites are available on request. BA in English Studies, UCL MA in Modern Literature, University of Kent at Canterbury PGCE Secondary English, Institute of Education Current DBS certificate

By teaching a technical approach to texts and essays, a tutee is soon able to develop a concise and cogent writing style, one which they can confidently apply under examination conditions. Knowing how to plan and adapt the question enables a student to start responses swiftly and strongly, feel replete with ideas and to target marks; oftentimes students say that they struggle to put their ideas down on paper, so being well prepared and fully informed of what the examiner is looking for is axiomatic. As well as drawing on a wealth of analytical terms, I teach students to be savvy about timings, avoid lapsing into narrative and reduce the burden of remembering long quotes. Similarly, I model creative writing skills which focus on how rather than what to write about, ensuring that work remains authentic and progressive. Lessons last between sixty to seventy minutes. All resources, marking of work and feedback between sessions is included. Happy to chat about your child's particular needs and interests before arranging a free trial.
