About Nerissa
I value education and all students being able to be given a chance. I have helped peers my own ages throughout high school with Academic English subjects. During the 2023 AP Exams, I earned a score of 5 on the AP English Language and Composition exam. I also work in a school-provided preschool where I work hands on with lesson planning, and I started volunteering in educational settings before I started to professionally work as a tutor. My teachers and friends describe me as responsible, helpful, and understanding, and those who know me that my main goal will always be to help uplift and support people in whatever way I can.

My lessons gear towards middle school to high school reading and writing topics in Academic English, but I also have experience in early childhood education. For reading, I focus on understanding literature concepts such as tone, themes, structure, character and setting understanding, and other fictional and creative reading topics. For writing, I focus on essay writing and understanding structure, purposes of writing, speeches, and commentary. I also can offer support in AP English Language and Composition as well as homework help and support. My approach to tutoring is breaking down the different aspects of a topic and focusing on different methods of learning and practice so that a student can build up their comprehension and strength in a subject. I believe in working on different, smaller levels of a topic first before trying to tackle the “big picture.” However, if my approach does not work for a student, I am always ready to change the lesson’s perspective to fit their needs, and I am always willing to take time outside of a scheduled lesson to refine my plan and educate myself on different methods to help a student in their education journey. I can always provide my own notes and work/essay examples from school that have helped me succeed in English to students.
