About Kavya
When I was in elementary school English was my hardest subject. I was the last to pass the ABC's test, and always behind in my reading milestones. It wasn't until I went to a tutor in 2nd grade that everything changed for me. My tutor was compassionate and extremely helpful, turning a subject I could barely comprehend, into my strongest one. I hope to be able to emulate my experience with children in elementary and middle school by strengthening their comprehension, grammar and writing skills through patient and determined tutoring.
I am currently a high school senior, and planning on attending college as an International Relations major, and English minor. My unweighted GPA is a 3.94/4.0, and I have gotten a 35/36 on my ACT, and a 1590/1600 on my SAT, receiving full scores on my English and Reading sections. I have been regularly working with elementary and middle school students for 3 years now, and I absolutely love doing it!

For the first meeting, I like to gauge the various learning goals that the parent and child have. Usually after the goals, and reasons for seeking a tutor are understood, I will discuss with the student in what settings they learn best, and what they value from me as a tutor. Every student is different, and a learning method that works for one student may not work for the next. From there I will likely assess the student, to be able to understand where they are relative to their goals.
A typical lesson lasts around 45-60 minutes depending on the preference of the student and parent. I start with a quick 10-minute interactive learning game for the student to review last week's lesson, and then we move on to newer material. First I will teach the student, and after every new concept is introduced, I have the child fill out a couple of questions on a worksheet I made for them. Toward the end of the lesson, I like to test the material they learned with another interactive game that quizzes their understanding. Every 5 or so sessions I will do a test, similar to the diagnostic one I do in the beginning to monitor growth and weak spots. This also acts as a tool for me to communicate with the parents about their child's progress. If the tutoring sessions are to cover homework assignments from school, I will use the homework as the worksheet, and have my lessons revolve around the schoolwork that the child receives.
As a tutor what sets me apart is my connection with children and the attention that I pay to each student. I will tailor and customize every lesson, and spend time outside of our tutoring session at no additional cost, creating lesson plans, and worksheets to help aid the growth of the student. I always want to make the lessons as fun and educational as possible. Utilizing learning materials such as Kahoot! and Quizlet allows me to make my lessons more interactive, and keep the student engaged.
