Look, I get it. Many people find literature overwhelming because they feel that there is supposed to be some Deep Hidden Meaning (tm). And I'll grant you, some literature is pretty difficult to decode. Most literature, though, isn't; the trick is to look at the text and see where it leads you. As with any skill, the more you do it, the better you get. Some people are also intimidated by writing; while I can't teach anyone to be a great writer, I can teach you how to be a competent writer--someone who can communicate their ideas effectively. Let me know what you need, and we can go from there!

Overall, I like to determine a student's current level of proficiency and proceed from there. For reading comprehension, I start with close reading; once we understand the literal meaning of the text, we can look at how the author uses various rhetorical devices to modify that meaning. If, for instance, someone is feeling very intimidated by poetry--and a lot of people do--I would start by analyzing a popular song, such as Santana's "Smooth". From there, we can apply that experience to poetry. I'm generally geared towards high school and college students.
