The basic fundament is that the child should be able to read write and comprehend independently. Make the child understand the particular topic ask the student to read it get the doubts cleared and then based on the chapter give a test to check. While dealing with younger or primary kids learning can be done in a fun method wherein including of games and stories which helps in building interests of the children. I strongly believe that teaching is a two way process where the child also has to be given a chance to communicate which helps in making studying fun.
