About Mikhal

I'm Mikhal Shvartsman, a Bioengineering student at Harvard University, and I've spent the past several years helping students of all ages build real, lasting understanding in math, science, and English. Since 2023, I've tutored students ages 5 to 18, designing individualized lesson plans grounded in each student's specific needs and curriculum requirements, an approach I refined further through formal teaching experience at Harvard's School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, where I taught bioengineering concepts to high schoolers and presented instructional research to faculty.

My academic background gives me depth as well as range: coursework spanning organic chemistry, multivariable calculus, and physics, combined with hands-on research experience, including a chemical engineering internship conducting controlled research for U.S. government agencies and an independent research project on cancer drug delivery presented to Harvard faculty. This is the same rigor and attention to detail I bring to every tutoring session.

Parents and students can expect consistency and accountability: clear session structure, regular progress tracking, and honest communication about where a student stands and what they need to improve. I take preparation seriously, and I hold myself to the same standards I was trained to uphold in academic and professional research settings.

My goal in every session is the same: to make sure students don't just memorize material, but genuinely understand it, and leave each lesson more confident than when they started.

Teaching Method and Techniques

I start by figuring out how each student thinks, not just what they know, then tailor my approach: visual diagrams, analogies, or step-by-step breakdowns depending on what clicks. I emphasize active learning, having students work through problems with guided questions rather than watching me solve them, so the understanding actually sticks.
A Typical Lesson Plan

Sessions open with a quick review of prior material and any homework questions. I then introduce the day's concept using a real-world example, work through a few problems together, and have the student practice independently while I give real-time feedback. We close with a recap and a few targeted practice problems for next time.

What Sets Me Apart

I'm a Bioengineering student at Harvard with strong, current math and science knowledge plus hands-on research and teaching experience, including as a Bioengineering Teaching Intern at Harvard SEAS. As a near-peer instructor, I often connect with younger students more naturally than an adult tutor might. I'm also fluent in Russian and proficient in French.

Who My Lessons Are For

I tutor students ages 5–18 across math, science, and English. For younger students, I focus on building strong fundamentals and confidence. For middle and high schoolers, I cover algebra through calculus, biology, chemistry, physics, and AP-level coursework, plus exam prep, college admission prep and French language support at the beginner-to-intermediate level.
