About James

I’m actually currently studying a Bachelor of Science, but will be studying jazz guitar in America in a few years time once I graduate. I direct a jazz big band and perform regularly with small groups around Melbourne. I would love to pass on my knowledge to other guitarists because I have experimented and explored all genres, starting as a rock guitarist where my introductions to improvisation took me through blues and soul music and finally opened me up to jazz music, where the improvisation and chords are most interesting to me. This understanding of different styles gives me a unique perspective and ability to drift towards whatever interests my students. I’m very patient and have studied developmental psychology at university which helps to find the best ways of getting information across to my students. I love music theory, particularly aural and jazz/modern harmony, and incorporate this into my guitar lessons, adjusting for each student.

About the lesson

My approach incorporates a combination of sight reading, technical study and learning songs from day one to maximise engagement and enjoyment! I believe the best way to learn guitar involves understanding how lessons are applied in real music situations rather than just learning technique. My background includes 10+ years of classical piano and jazz saxophone which gives me multiple approaches to tailor to each student based on their learning styles. Able to teach all levels from absolute beginner to advanced jazz. I often integrate small music theory lessons into the guitar work we'll do, which helps to deepen musical understanding. Our lessons are sure to be a productive and fun time! :)
