About Marcelo

My professionalism goes beyond my playing ability, as musicianship stems beyond the idea of being technically advanced. Most performers active in the industry have other skills that aid them in their careers. Personality is both important in getting the gig but also playing the music. Understanding the self and asking for assistance to achieve your goals should never to be looked down upon but reinforced.

Tapping into a state of mind that unlocks the full potential of your expression is the goal and we can do that both through conversation and learning. Understanding how you feel will prevent things like over-playing, writers block, knowing what to play, and performance anxiety. Standing firmly on how you play supported by the idea of musical integrity is the goal.

About the lesson

My approach to the drums is to understand what role I play in my musical endeavors. Listening and responding to other musicians to further our musical conversation is my bread and butter. Together, we can reference my favorite recordings of my favorite players and break down the role of the drummer. In a jazz context it’s important to know where we sit in the group and the groove, because we’re all working together to let the music come about in a natural and organic way. Being a team player and giving as much as you’re receiving from the other performers.

I have been playing jazz since 7th grade and from that point I have learned it is more righteous to listen well than to speak poorly. Knowing your craft and having a firm understanding of what you’re playing.

I look forward to even just talking to ambitious musicians to further our understanding of what it means to play music.
