About Jan Louis

I hold a PhD in Physics and have several years of experience in both research and teaching. During my time at university, I gained hands-on experience as a demonstrator, guiding students through problem-solving, laboratory work, and complex concepts in physics and mathematics. This role not only strengthened my ability to explain difficult material clearly, but also allowed me to support students of varying levels and learning styles.

My approach to tutoring is rooted in clarity, patience, and structure. I believe every student can excel in science and mathematics when concepts are broken down in a way that makes sense to them. With my background in advanced physics, I bring not only subject expertise but also the ability to connect abstract theory to practical examples, helping students build both confidence and understanding.

I encourage students to ask questions freely and to explain their reasoning—this builds confidence and ensures true understanding rather than rote memorization. Toward the end of the lesson, I set aside time for review and application, so you leave each session knowing not only what the concept is, but also how to use it in practice.

What makes my teaching different is the balance between rigorous subject knowledge and student-centered learning. My background in advanced physics allows me to connect abstract theory to real-world contexts, while my experience as a demonstrator taught me how to simplify and reframe ideas until they “click.” This ensures that each lesson is not only informative but also motivating—you’ll see results while building confidence step by step.

Details

For Existing Clients:
Old rates apply and will keep on applying until 31 December 2025, i.e. there will be no increase during 2025.

For New Clients:
The amount of R450/hour was determined taking into account the average rate of science and math tutors in the Sandbaai/Hermanus area, as well as my own qualifications and skills.

It is also worth mentioning that even though a single lesson might be only one hour long, the time that went into preparing the lesson far exceeds one hour.

Please be assured that I am committed to charging the lowest reasonable rate. I know that economic conditions are currently challenging for many of us.
