About Jeff
Recently, I sat with a young artist at a coffee shop after asking her if I could see her sketchbook. I made her aware of my background and asked her if she'd like a critique. Two hours later she remarked how amazed she was to have learned so much in such a short amount of time.
it is miserly to not return what I was so graciously given by many a wonderful educator and fellow artists along the way. This is why I have decided to teach—not for the money (as there are much easier ways to make money...much more money), but simply to help others feel the zeal of inspiration every person has the right to feel.
D+D+D = Talent
When I walked into Sal Catalano's Foundations of Illustration class in the fall of 1997, I was a 27-year-old freshman who'd decided to become an artist on a whim.
I wasn't sure if I had talent, and if I did, I had no idea how to cultivate it and for what purpose.
Sal had drawn a triangle on the whiteboard with three D's in each corner and the equation read D+D+D =Talent.
He explained to us that talent was the sum total of desire, discipline, and determination.
I am living proof that a person who was not gifted with a natural predisposition toward visual art could achieve a high degree of proficiency in drawing and painting if they simply believed in themselves and applied themselves accordingly.
You, too, can draw and paint on an exceptionally high level if you are willing to trudge the road of excellence.
My job is to help you avoid making the mistakes that I made, thus helping you to shave off months, if not years, in your pursuit of that mastery.

My lessons are geared towards High school students who are in the midst of developing portfolios for entrance into art school.
Adults who want to learn the foundations of traditional picture-making. light and shade, color theory, form and function, composition, artistic anatomy, and much more.
Veterans who wish to learn the same as a means to manage P.T.S.D, Anxiety, and depression
Draw like you paint—paint as you draw. The great Steve Assael imparted this advice to me, and I will impart it to you.
Some favor line, some favor sculpting form, revealing light and shade by massing and erasing in charcoal. Either way I am well versed in both approaches.
I also take a no-nonsense approach to teaching atmospheric and linear perspective, which will have you conceiving of well-balanced compositions in days and weeks, not months and years.
No two teachers are alike, just as no two students are alike. A good teacher is able to diagnose a student's strengths and weaknesses. Some weaknesses are worth cultivating and some are not. My job as your teacher is to help you come to those determinations on your own, not to have you conform to some pedagogical dogma. Though, of course, I will let you know if I think you are serving your best interests by going down what I see a questionable path.
