About Miles

I am a professional actor who trained at the Royal Central School of Speech & Drama. Whilst there, I sat on numerous audition panels for prospective pupils, so know exactly what it is drama schools are looking for. I'm also still able to remember how daunting it is going into that audition room and am more than happy to share my advice on how to deal with nerves!

I worked in a senior school before attending drama school, helping young actors prepare speeches for both their exams and drama school / university auditions, with consistently successful results. Since leaving drama school I have also led workshops for both adults and children on how to perform Shakespearean texts (I have an advanced DBS Check on the Update Service).

I specialise in Shakespeare delivery but am also equipped to work on Contemporary Monologues and Poetry. I am also a writer and have worked with Live Theatre and Northern Broadsides. I would be more than happy to guide new writers on techniques for improving and developing their craft.

I can never guarantee that my classes will get you into drama school / the role you wanted, but they will certainly improve your audition technique and confidence when going into the audition room. Even if you're happy with your process but just want an objective eye to see your work, I'm more than happy to have a watch and offer some advice!

About the lesson

My aim in these classes is to develop confidence with the pieces you have chosen. This will come from both analysing the text and then getting it up on its feet.

I think it's important to have a full understanding of what's going on in the text, particularly when it comes to Shakespeare. We will first look for clues in the text and also investigate how the piece is structured (don't worry: I promise it won't be boring!)

This will then progress to incorporating action and movement, as it's vital Shakespeare doesn't become too theory-heavy. We will do a few games to bring play into the room before undertaking a few simple exercises to fully engage the body with what is being said. This will culminate in pulling everything back to being performance ready.

I'm more than happy for students to bring their own text to work on but can also offer a wealth of characters and monologues to look at if the student isn't sure where to start: just give me a sense of the character you'd like to play, and I'll have something up my sleeve!
