- Your teaching method and techniques
Interactive Learning using engagement and other activities to attract the interest of the students.
Using technology to help using educational sources and simulations to target the students’ understanding of the material.
Having a student centered approach allows students to take control of their education.
- A typical lesson plan
Lesson Plan: Introduction to the Human Skeletal System
Objective:
Students will be able to identify and describe the major bones of the human skeletal system, understand their functions, and explain how bones interact with each other to support movement and overall body function.
Materials:
Skeleton model or skeletal system diagrams (print or digital)
Bone labels (printed or sticky notes)
Whiteboard and markers
Anatomy app or interactive software (optional)
Worksheet with a diagram of the skeleton and related questions
Scissors and glue (for worksheet activity)
Projector and computer (if using digital resources)
Introduction (10 minutes):
Hook: Show a short, engaging video or animation of the skeletal system highlighting its major functions and importance. (Optional: use a 3D anatomy app or interactive model.)
Discussion: Ask students to brainstorm what they know about bones and their functions. Write key points on the board.
Direct Instruction (15 minutes):
Presentation: Use a skeleton model or diagram to introduce the major bones of the human body:
Skull: Protects the brain
Spine: Supports the torso and protects the spinal cord
Ribs: Protects the chest cavity
Humerus, Radius, and Ulna: Arm bones involved in movement
Femur, Patella, Tibia, and Fibula: Leg bones supporting movement and weight
Pelvis: Supports the trunk and connects the spine to the legs
Explanation: Discuss the function of bones in supporting the body, protecting organs, and facilitating movement.
Guided Practice (15 minutes):
Activity: Distribute worksheets with a blank skeleton diagram. Have students:
Label the major bones using labels or sticky notes.
Cut and Paste: Match bone names and functions to their corresponding locations on the diagram.
Support: Walk around to assist students with labeling and answering any questions.
Independent Practice (10 minutes):
Worksheet: Have students complete a few questions on the worksheet about the functions of different bones and their importance in the skeletal system.
Example Questions:
"What is the primary function of the femur?"
"How do the ribs protect vital organs?"
Closure (5 minutes):
Review: Summarize the key points about the skeletal system. Ask a few students to share what they learned about a specific bone and its function.
Exit Ticket: Have students write down one interesting fact about the skeletal system on an index card and submit it as they leave.
Assessment:
Formative: Observe student participation during the group activity and review completed worksheets.
Summative: Evaluate the accuracy of labeled diagrams and responses to worksheet questions.
Differentiation:
For Advanced Students: Provide a more detailed worksheet with additional bones and functions to research and include.
For Struggling Students: Offer a labeled skeleton diagram with fewer bones to start and provide additional one-on-one support.
Extension:
Homework: Ask students to research a specific bone disorder or injury and prepare a brief presentation for the next class, explaining how it affects the skeletal system.
Reflection:
Teacher’s Note: After the lesson, reflect on student engagement and understanding. Consider any adjustments needed for future lessons based on student feedback and performance.
- What sets you apart as a tutor
Having a student centered approach and allowing students to extend feedback to the instructor allows the instructor to develop stronger skills and set themselves apart from others as an instructor
- Who the lessons are for (degree, level, class, specificities, etc.)
The lessons can be developed for all levels of education.
