About Soona

Originally from New York City, Soona Lee-Tolley is a guitarist and violinist based in Los Angeles. When she was four years old, she began studying classical violin, and continued her studies through private lessons, orchestras, and chamber ensembles through high school, cementing a passion and dedication to music from a young age. She picked up the guitar in high school, utilizing much of the music theory and technical skills she learned from the violin, and instantly fell in love with it. She is a recent graduate of the University of Southern California’s Popular Music Program, where she majored in Guitar Performance, and is now actively performing and gigging in and around Los Angeles with various artists. She strongly believes that any student can learn to play an instrument with the right instruction, regardless of their natural musical abilities, and looks forward to helping students achieve their musical goals!

About the lesson

With a background in classical violin, I learned via the Suzuki method, which emphasizes the idea that anyone can learn to play an instrument with the right instruction, regardless of their natural inclination towards music. That really stuck with me growing up and is a steadfast belief of mine today, and I approach each student I teach with the mindset that they can all succeed with the right instruction and practice.

One of my greatest strengths as a teacher is being able to assess what each student needs that is unique to them; as someone who, like many, was self-taught on guitar for a period of time, I understand the struggle of vague, cookie-cutter advice that does not apply to one’s individual struggles. I cultivated a strong ability to analyze problems and find solutions in my playing, and I believe that I can help my students do the same.
In addition to my teaching experience and background, I am proficient in a variety of musical styles, including rock, blues, jazz, funk, disco, and nearly anything else, allowing me to cater to diverse musical tastes and preferences. I also have a background in classical violin and am well-versed in music theory and composition, and am therefore able to provide you with a comprehensive understanding of the fundamentals of music and the tools to express yourself creatively.
