About Mariah

Hi there! My name is Mariah Briones and I'm your compassionate and friendly English and Writing tutor. I take pride in my ability to take complex knowledge and convey it back to you in a simple and concise way in order for long-term retention and application. I love doing what I do because I was once in your shoes and wish I had someone like myself in my corner to be able to assist me through academic difficulty. I'm here to tell you, you got this - and to never give up because I'm not giving up on you!

About the lesson

My teaching methods apply to students as young as Grade 3 all the way up to undergraduate English and Composition classes. Each session varies depending on the student and their academic level in order to keep it fun and interesting while still strengthening their knowledge of the material being covered. First thing, I like to honor the student and appreciate their time and attention in advance to bring out their sense of feeling valued. Feeling valued automatically creates a welcoming shift in mindset that allows for new ideas and opportunities to grow.

A typical lesson plan begins with listing student objectives so the student has an idea of what the learning outcome will be. Listing objectives prior to beginning the session is important that way throughout the lesson as we work through multiple practices, we can continue to refer to those objectives to keep the end goal in mind. Practices consist of several examples and opportunities for the student to recite the knowledge in their own words to ensure their understanding for long-term retention. To conclude the session I like to give the last 15 minutes back to the student to ask any questions over what was discussed during the session. If there aren't any questions, I have a few that I ask back to the students with purpose so I can see where they are at and determine what areas need more practice. Doing this sets me apart as a tutor because even though the session is over, I want to make absolutely sure that each student retains the covered knowledge and bring to light areas that may not be as strong as others, for future practice.
