About Charlie

Hello, I'm Charlie. Originally a school leaver, I returned to education in my early twenties and became the first in my family to attend university. I recently completed my undergraduate degree at the University of Cambridge, graduating with a first-class honours in English. I'm not a natural! I was originally educated in Welsh, so my exposure to English as an academic language was minimal. I know first-hand that English is something that can be learned and practised to a high standard. I'd love to share the approaches that have worked for me with anybody who feels they require some assistance in their approach to either English literature or the language itself. I'm fluent in Welsh, and would be happy to conduct lessons in Welsh if required.

About the lesson

My approach centres on close reading – the foundation of all literary study. In our sessions we’ll focus primarily on the text. From there we’ll explore grammar, structure, literary devices, and context. I think it's important to approach these not as detached theory, but as means of giving full expression to both your interpretations and your own creativity. Above all, my aim is to make you feel confident and excited about reading and writing. Enthusiasm is key – exam technique will follow. I aim to teach in a way that will make you passionate about reading and writing even beyond the requirements of your subject or course.

I tutor for GCSE and A-Level exams and coursework. I also tutor for university applications, including Oxbridge interviews. My lessons typically last 60 minutes, though I also offer longer sessions if needed (e.g. for coursework or interview prep).
