About Emily

I’m a theatre practitioner, tutor, and educator with over 10 years of experience teaching drama, English, and literature. I hold a Bachelor’s in Drama and Political Science from the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, a Master’s in Advanced Theatre Practice from the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, and work professionally across theatre making and education.

I grew up surrounded by champions for education. My mum was a teacher for over 20 years, and I’ve always genuinely enjoyed learning. That early love of school and curiosity shapes how I teach now. I want learning to feel engaging, supportive, and meaningful rather than pressured or purely exam driven.

Originally from the US, I’ve been based in the UK for the past 2.5 years and have worked as a visiting drama lecturer at secondary schools across the UK. I’m also a lead instructor at Tarka London, where I work with children aged 3–7, using play and performance to build confidence, creativity, and communication skills.

My teaching is creative, student centred, and process led. Whether working on drama, theatre studies, essay writing, or textual analysis, I focus on meeting students where they are and helping them develop confidence, critical thinking, and a genuine enjoyment of learning.

About the lesson

My lessons are highly personalised and rooted in creative practice. I begin by understanding where each student is at, not just academically, but in how they think, learn, and engage, and what their classroom or exam expectations are. From there, I shape lessons that meet those requirements without reducing learning to memorisation or box-ticking.

With over 10 years of tutoring experience, I teach drama, theatre studies, English, essay writing, and literature analysis through practical, imaginative, and discussion-led approaches. I often use creative exercises, performance-based exploration, improvisation, textual play, and reflective discussion to help students genuinely absorb material rather than simply prepare answers. My aim is to build confidence, curiosity, and critical thinking — supporting students to understand why choices are made in drama and writing, not just what to say in an exam. Whether a student thrives on structure or experimentation, I adapt each lesson to suit their learning style and help them engage deeply with the work.
