I take my time in teaching my students to read. We first lay the very basic foundations of letter identification and once that is mastered, we move on to letter sounds. This also includes both vowel sounds. Afterwards, we focus on the concept of blends. That is when you put a consonant and vowel together to form a new sound or “blend.”
This lays the foundation for students to be able to begin reading three letter words easily.
I scaffold on top of this foundation by slowly adding in more letters to the words they are mastering and teach them basic rules such as one and two Vowel word rules and how they should be read.
