About Maria
As someone who mastered Chinese from scratch, I deeply understand the language learning journey. I hold a master's degree in linguistics from a Chinese university, have achieved HSK6 proficiency, and bring 5 years of hands-on teaching experience from a language center. I'm particularly passionate about Chinese characters and excel at making their fascinating cultural stories come alive. My teaching approach combines proven language acquisition methods with practical experience, having helped many students progress from complete beginners to confident speakers. I love mixing up different teaching styles to help my students actually learn, not just memorize. Every day, we work on real-world tasks because that's how people truly pick up a language. When we hit tricky grammar or vocabulary, I break it down step by step. Plus, I make sure students get plenty of time to practice speaking - after all, that's why most people learn a language!
My lessons have a clear flow that just works. We start by catching up and reviewing what we learned last time, then watch some real videos (not those cheesy textbook ones!) to hear natural language. I explain any new language points that come up, and then students get to use what they've learned in a practical task - like ordering food or planning a trip. We wrap up by talking about what clicked and what didn't.
My students tell me I really notice when they're struggling with something and adjust my teaching to help them get it. I put my heart into preparing solid lessons, and my education background means I know what I'm doing. Whether I'm teaching kids or adults, beginners or advanced students, I make sure everyone gets what they need to progress.
