About Grace

As a dedicated musician and educator, I bring over 12 years of experience in violin, including performing with multiple symphony orchestras. While my career transitioned to vocal performance, I have continued my studies in both violin and piano. I passed my piano proficiency exams and have gained experience as an accompanist, working with a variety of musicians and performers. I studied opera for 6 years and recently completed a festival in Lucca, Italy, studying opera and Italian. I have a strong foundation in Italian, Spanish, German, and French. Additionally, I am currently enrolled in Speech-Language Pathology classes to further deepen my understanding of vocal health and function, which enriches my approach to teaching. My goal is to inspire students to achieve their musical potential with confidence, whether they’re learning voice, violin, or piano.

My approach as a tutor combines a balance of structured, evidence-based techniques with an adaptable, student-centered philosophy. I focus on creating a safe, engaging learning environment where students feel empowered to explore new concepts. I prioritize:
Active learning: Instead of just teaching theory, I guide students to apply what they learn through exercises, performance, and practical examples.
Customized methods: Each student’s unique needs, whether they’re a beginner learning their first scales or a seasoned musician fine-tuning technique, are taken into account. I’m comfortable with students at all levels and adjust my teaching style to fit individual goals.
Holistic understanding: My background in both vocal performance and music theory allows me to explain concepts in ways that connect both the technical and expressive aspects of music.
Voice science: My experience in voice pedagogy informs my teaching, emphasizing vocal health and efficient technique.
Typical Lesson Plan:
Warm-up & Vocal Health (10-15 minutes):
Depending on the student’s vocal needs, I may lead them through vocal exercises, focusing on proper breath support, resonance, and vocal cord engagement. This part of the lesson always includes a discussion of any vocal concerns or questions.
Theory / Technique (15-20 minutes):
This section focuses on building foundational skills like sight-reading, rhythm exercises, and aural skills. For voice students, this could include working on a specific technique (e.g., breath control, articulation, etc.).
Repertoire Practice (20-25 minutes):
We dive into the student’s repertoire, whether it’s an aria, art song, or musical theater number. I provide detailed feedback on phrasing, musicality, diction, and expression. For instrumentalists, this might involve practicing a specific passage or technique on the violin or piano.
Reflection and Homework (5-10 minutes):
At the end of the lesson, I give the student feedback on what went well and areas to work on for the next session. I often assign targeted exercises or pieces for practice based on their current progress.
What Sets Me Apart as a Tutor:
Interdisciplinary Expertise: My experience in both vocal performance and music theory, along with my training in speech pathologies, gives me a unique perspective in teaching voice and musicianship. I can explain voice technique from both a musical and anatomical standpoint, helping students understand not just how to sing, but why it works.
Versatile Repertoire: I work with a wide variety of genres and languages, whether it’s classical, opera, musical theater, or contemporary styles. I can assist students in preparing for performances or auditions, tailoring the material to fit their individual strengths.
Focus on Student Confidence: I’m committed to helping students grow not only as musicians but as confident performers. My background in acting and music theater adds a layer of storytelling and emotional depth to vocal lessons.
Who the Lessons Are For:
I teach students at all levels, from beginners to advanced learners, and cater to individuals in both group and one-on-one settings. I’m equipped to help:
Voice students (ages 10+): Those who want to develop technique, musicality, or vocal performance skills.
Music theory students: Students who wish to improve their sight-reading, aural skills, and music theory knowledge.
Instrumentalists (piano and violin): Students looking to deepen their proficiency or expand their repertoire.
Musicians and performers: Individuals preparing for auditions, recitals, or performances, particularly those in vocal, music theater, or classical settings.
