About Leigh-Anne

Hi! I’m Leigh-Anne, a qualified Science teacher, with experience teaching Physical Sciences, Life Sciences and Natural Sciences from Grades 8–12.

I’m passionate about helping learners realise that science doesn’t have to feel complicated or overwhelming. My tutoring style focuses on breaking difficult concepts into simple, logical steps, identifying gaps in understanding, and then building the learner’s confidence from there.

I understand that learners don’t all learn in the same way. During lessons, I adapt my explanations to the individual learner and use worked examples, diagrams, step-by-step methods and exam-style questions to make abstract concepts easier to understand.

For Physical Sciences, I place particular emphasis on helping learners understand why a calculation or formula works rather than simply memorising steps. For Life Sciences, I help learners organise large amounts of content, understand terminology and develop the skills needed to answer examination questions correctly.

My aim is not simply to help learners improve their marks, but to help them become more confident, independent science learners who know how to approach unfamiliar questions.

Whether your child needs ongoing support, help catching up, additional exam preparation or assistance with a particularly difficult section of the curriculum, lessons can be tailored to their individual needs and current level of understanding.

About the lesson

Science becomes much easier when you understand why things happen, rather than trying to memorise formulas, definitions and facts without understanding them.

My lessons are personalised according to each learner’s needs. We first identify where the learner is struggling, address gaps in foundational knowledge, and then work towards confidently answering CAPS and exam-style questions.

A typical lesson may include:
• A simple explanation or revision of the concept
• Diagrams, examples and real-life comparisons to make abstract ideas easier to understand
• Step-by-step worked examples
• Guided practice where we solve questions together
• CAPS/NSC-style examination questions
• Identification of common mistakes and misconceptions
• Exam technique and guidance on how to interpret questions
• A short recap to ensure the learner understands before moving on.

Physical Sciences
For Physical Sciences, I focus strongly on problem-solving and understanding the reasoning behind calculations.
Learners are taught how to:
✓ Identify what information has been given
✓ Determine what the question is asking
✓ Select the correct principle or formula
✓ Substitute values correctly
✓ Work systematically through calculations
✓ Use units correctly
✓ Interpret graphs and diagrams
✓ Explain answers using correct scientific terminology

Life Sciences
For Life Sciences, I help learners move beyond simply memorising large amounts of information.
We focus on:
✓ Understanding key biological concepts
✓ Learning terminology in a meaningful way
✓ Reading and interpreting diagrams
✓ Data-response and graph questions
✓ Genetics and pedigree problems
✓ Scientific investigations
✓ Long-response questions
✓ Exam terminology and command words
✓ Learning how to structure answers to earn marks

Grades 8–9 Natural Sciences
For younger learners, the emphasis is on developing a strong science foundation before entering the FET phase.

I aim to make lessons encouraging and comfortable so that learners feel free to say, “I don’t understand” and ask questions without feeling embarrassed.

Whether a learner needs regular weekly support, help catching up, preparation for an upcoming assessment, or intensive Matric revision, lessons can be adapted to their individual goals.

- explain how tutoring will work.
