Teaching methods should always depend upon the learning type of the student, i.e. there is not one specific way in which students should be taught, but many different ones - it is up to the tutor to get to know the students and their ways of learning to choose the right teaching methods. Another important factor is the subject; languages are taught in a different manner than sciences.
When it comes to languages, it is necessary to firstly find out in what area the help is needed (oral/written comprehension/production? Language mediation? Grammar? Vocabulary?), before proceeding to the next step, which is improving the student's abilities in (mainly) that specific area.
Personally, I am not a big fan of sticking to homework exercises; instead I prefer to find/invent different and new texts and tasks that help to explain and to train certain phenomena, so that in the end, the students are capable of resolving homework assignments etc. independently.
