About Jacey
Hi! I'm Jacey and over the last 7 years I've taught and volunteered with students in more settings than I can count. I pride myself on my flexibility and ability to remain professional no matter what's thrown at me- everyone deserves to learn and that extends far beyond the traditional classroom setting.
My work in Community Mental Health facilities, various special needs programs, refugee centers, and even aboard a mobile teaching program showed me just how many barriers students of all ages and backgrounds face and made me even more dedicated to break them down.
I have a BA from Michigan State University in Psychology and Fine Arts with a minor in Art History. Believe it or not, these things are deeply intertwined and are understood so much more thoroughly when interwoven with each other. This is a key principle of my teaching practice: it's a lot less boring and overwhelming to weave new pieces into your existing world than to hand you mismatched pieces of a new one off to the side.
When I'm not teaching I spend my time drawing, playing video games, and watching 45 minute YouTube videos about things I didn't even know I was curious about.
I'm excited to get to know you and what you love- I know we can connect it to your U.S. History class somehow. I promise!

There are a few things that are the enemies of learning: overwhelm, anxiety, and total boredom. Luckily, we can knock out these roadblocks! There's ALWAYS a way to make subject matter digestible and engaging but it's not one size fits all. I prioritize getting to know who my students are in the world and use their strengths and interests to our advantage. I am a professional with valuable experience and I know my stuff but that doesn't mean I sacrifice being an approachable person. I don't do stuffy, I don't do impatient or rigid, and I'm not here to hate on you!
Lessons will start with your questions and your insight about where you're struggling and why. We will use proven methods like scaffolding to connect everything you're learning together- nobody's brain holds onto random facts floating around in space.
I enjoy the world and feel immersed in the things I get to experience because I understand and connect psychology, social sciences, art, and history to everything I see and do. I'd love for you to experience that too. But first let's figure out how to get an A in this class.
I have degrees in Psychology and Fine arts with studies focusing on social sciences, culture, history, and civics. We'd be a good match if you're taking Art History, World History, Psychology, Sociology, Civics, or anything at the high school level, AP, or undergraduate courses. Psychology and Art History specifically are my jam!
I've also taught K-8 in the classroom so I'd love to work with students in those grades specifically on literature, social studies, writing, or anything related. I'm going to keep it real: above 5th grade, you probably don't want my help with your math class!
Message me to talk about what you need and see how I can help you out. I'll keep it real about what we can do and put my heart into helping you. Education is my passion and every time I watch someone start to understand something new, I know I'm in the right place.
