About Emily
I've always loved English. I think books have a unique way of helping us see the world differently — whether that's through challenging our views, introducing us to new perspectives, or simply allowing us to escape into another world for a while.
I studied English and Creative Writing before completing the Teach First programme and working as a secondary English teacher. Although I now work in Learning & Development in a law firm, I missed teaching too much to leave it behind completely, so I've continued tutoring alongside my career for the last three years.
One of my favourite things about tutoring is seeing a student's confidence grow. English can feel overwhelming when you're faced with endless quotes, essays and terminology, but I love helping students break things down into manageable steps and realise they're capable of more than they thought.
My lessons are supportive, engaging and tailored to each student. Whether you're aiming for a Grade 9 or just trying to feel less stressed about English, I'll meet you where you are and help you make steady progress.
I'm based in Richmond (TW9) and offer both online and in-person sessions before and after work. Outside of tutoring, you'll usually find me reading, practising yoga, going for long walks or spending time with my cat.

I specialise in GCSE English Language and Literature, with experience teaching AQA and Edexcel specifications. I can support students with Shakespeare, modern texts, poetry, essay writing, literary analysis, exam technique and more.
Every lesson is tailored to the individual student. I quickly identify strengths, areas for development and gaps in knowledge, then create a structured plan to help them make progress. I break down complex concepts into manageable steps, use targeted questioning to develop critical thinking, and provide clear, actionable feedback so students know exactly how to improve.
I believe students learn best when they feel comfortable asking questions and exploring ideas, so I aim to create lessons that are supportive, engaging and enjoyable. English is a subject full of debate, interpretation and creativity, and I love helping students discover that analysing a poem or character can actually be interesting (and sometimes even fun!).
Alongside building confidence, I place a strong emphasis on exam skills, using retrieval practice, model answers and exam-style questions to help students apply their knowledge effectively. Whether a student is aiming for a Grade 9 or simply looking to improve and feel more confident in class, my goal is to help them make steady, measurable progress.
Lessons are typically one hour long, although I am happy to discuss alternative arrangements.
Recommendations
Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the tutor.
Emily tutored our daughter in English Language and Literature, and in RS, as she worked towards her GCSE. She really connected with our daughter, listened to her, identified her weaknesses, built on her strengths, and encouraged her and gently pushed her towards exam success. Emily took real interest in our daughter, was reliable, fun, funny, and very kind. Our entire family like her very much, and are sad that our daughter has now finished her GCSEs and won't be working on the subjects she did with Emily any longer. And the results were good - our daughter went up at least a grade, possibly two, working with Emily on RS.
