About Charlotte

I am an actor and writer who trained at the London Academy of Dramatic Arts (LAMDA). I now tutor students in both performance and public speaking. I have noticed that the skills we are taught as actors are incredibly useful for anyone who would like to improve their ability and confidence in communicating. Since graduating, I have worked across screen and theatre. My work has been received critical acclaim over 12 publications, has been featured in THE TIMES, PLAYBILL and on SKY. My solo show, Almost Adult, received OffWestEnd's OffComm Award. I have been tutoring children and teenagers for several years as well as facilitating adult acting classes. Alongside my private clients, I am a tutor on a public speaking and debating panel in which give tutors individualised, quick-fire feedback on their public speaking. I also founded the National Youth Theatre Play-reading Group in which actors meet weekly to read a brand new play. I specialise in one-to-one tutoring and have students from age 8-17 who are all gaining confidence and technique through their tailored lessons.

ACTING LESSONS: At its heart, acting is storytelling. Having trained at LAMDA, my tutoring process begins with finding the truth of the script through analysis. First and foremost, I encourage my students to think about what their character wants and why they are speaking these words. Once you have a clear understanding of the script you’re working with, you are able to get creative and deliver powerful performances. As someone with a background in improvisation and comedy, I always push my students to try out new things and play with their script in different ways. ACTING: "WHAT TO EXPECT?" After the vocal warm-up, we would then move onto working on your audition monologues. This includes analysis of the text, building characterisation, short improvisations and movement work. DRAMA SCHOOL AUDITION PREP: Having auditioned for drama school for several years, I know how daunting the process can be. The competition for drama school auditions can be intense and it’s key to have a mentor who can act as a helping hand along the way. I am a believer that storytelling is one of the most important skills for an actor. You need to show your panel that you can play for your objective whilst creating the key shifts in the text. Drama schools are ultimately looking for unique actors who have distinct, grounded voices. You have to be ready for the training ahead. I help students to find mature and sophisticated performance styles to show panels that they are ready for the rigorous training. The process of preparation begins with choosing the right speech. We will test drive several speeches and find one that feels right for your voice. Once we have found your speeches, we break down the ‘story’. What does your character want? How does their conflict with the other character/s manifest? When are they closest to getting what they want? When are they furthest away? All this can seem quite complicated at first, but once you understand your character’s internal mechanisms, you can begin to play. Once you understand the text, you can have fun with it. We will work on exercises (some of which are used in auditions) as well as developing skills such as spontaneity, freedom of movement and vocal skills. • When did you start practicing? How did this passion find you?

I have been acting since I was about 9. But even before that, I was always putting on shows for my family and creating stories. As a teenager, I was lucky enough to perform at The Lowry in Manchester in the debut of Alistair McDowall's play 'Zero for the Young Dudes'. This experience solidified my passion for acting and I decided to audition for drama school. At LAMDA, I learnt the technique to support my storytelling and I took that into the projects I have done since.
  • Which artists or works affect you the most?

As an actor-writer, I am hugely inspired by actors like Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Daisy May Cooper and Jamie Demetriou who have taken ownership over their careers by making their own work. Not only am I a fan of their hilarious, clever comedy but I am also inspired by their autonomy in telling their own stories.
  • What are the qualities and skill required to succeed in this area?

The acting industry is a tough industry to be in. It requires determination, self belief and resilience. With the amount of rejection you face, it's important that you have belief in your ability and that you are enough. The acting muscle is also a muscle that needs to be worked regularly. I continue to go to acting lessons even now, because if you don't work the muscle then it gets dusty.
  • What is the most valuable advice you can give to help someone stay focused on creative projects?

Do 'The Artist's Way' by Julia Cameron! It is a workbook that helps you to unblock your creativity and encourages you to start new creative projects.
  • How would you describe your passion; how does it make you feel?

Acting and the art of storytelling makes me feel like I am making positive changes in the world. Especially by making my own work, I am able to put my thoughts and feelings out there and reach out to people who may be feeling the same.
  • What creative achievements are you particularly proud of?

I am most proud of my tragicomic solo show, Almost Adult, which I performed for a month at the Edinburgh Fringe this summer. It was a real challenge to perform alone on stage for an hour and it was a great exercise in taking the audience on a journey with me and keeping them engaged and emotionally invested throughout.
  • Have you ever been surprised by a student; by their ability or quick progression?

I am always impressed by my student's ability to pick up new skills. In particular, I have been surprised by several students in their application of the vocal skills I have taught them. One of my students came to me with a habit of breathing into their chest and a lack of articulation. But, by practicing the vocal warm ups I taught them, they was breathing into their stomach and articulating within a few weeks of working with me.
  • Being a Superprof is an art! What is your secret?

The most important thing is patience and empathy. I know how nerve-wracking it can be to perform a speech or a scene. I think a compassionate approach is key to putting students at ease and helping them to do their best work.
