About Daniel

I am a full-time professional English tutor with an MA in English and 15 years’ teaching experience, specialising in high-impact preparation for school entrance exams (7+, 11+, 13+, 16+), GCSE, and school interviews. I combine academic rigour with a warm, motivating approach to help students thrive.

My pupils consistently secure top school offers, including St Paul’s, Westminster, Highgate, HBS, QEB, UCS, NLCS, City of London, Dulwich, Alleyn’s, Haberdashers’, King’s College, and many others. Families often face the happy challenge of multiple offers, built on consistent guidance and focused preparation. GCSE students can expect significant grade improvements, with most achieving at least a two-grade jump, and many substantially more.

Alongside school-age tuition, I work with adults seeking to strengthen their English for professional, academic, or personal purposes — from improving writing and presentation skills to preparing for university applications and professional qualifications.

As a trained interviewer, I bring specialist insight into the admissions process, ensuring students are fully prepared for interviews as well as exams. I am also the author of five books, including the interview guide Interview Superpower.

Before tutoring, I worked at Goldman Sachs for 16 years, an experience that helped shape my results-oriented and supportive teaching style.

I believe every student can excel when they feel confident and engaged. Whether preparing for entrance exams, refining a GCSE essay, or developing advanced writing skills as an adult, we will focus on clarity of thought, self-expression, and lasting confidence. One of the greatest joys of my work is witnessing students’ transformation as their confidence and expression flourish.

Beyond individual lessons, I offer comprehensive support throughout the admissions and exam journey, including planning, feedback, bespoke resources, and strategic advice on school selection and timelines. I am available between sessions to answer questions, provide guidance, and keep learning on track.

You can find out more about me and my teaching on my website: (concealed information).
Please feel free to get in touch — I’d be delighted to discuss how I can help your child, or you yourself, reach your goals.

What to expect

Lessons are engaging, focused, and tailored to each student’s needs. I begin with thorough diagnostic assessments to identify strengths and target areas for improvement. All materials are provided, from curated past papers to creative prompts, and every lesson emphasises genuine mastery: writing with clarity, thinking critically, and engaging insightfully with texts.

You will receive regular progress updates, planning calls, and ongoing guidance between lessons. Bespoke mock assessments with detailed feedback, continuous parental support, full access to a private resource bank (including hard-to-source past papers), strategic advice on school selection and admissions timelines, and expert interview coaching are all included.

I offer a free initial session to discuss goals and how I can help. Scheduling is very flexible — I can usually accommodate lessons throughout the week and at weekends.

I am always happy to answer questions or discuss your concerns — please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I've loved reading and writing ever since I can remember. My first student was at 16: a friend's brother who was struggling with his English; I loved helping him and seeing him progress and grow in confidence.

I tutored for a while after university too. Then, after working in publishing and finance, I returned to tutoring full-time about ten years ago now, and I find it more and more rewarding all the time.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

My main subjects are Reading, Writing and Speaking, as well as the various hurdles of the schools' admissions process, which include 11+, GCSEs, Verbal Reasoning, Interview Technique, Confidence, Work and Organisation Skills, and so on.

I also teach Public Speaking and Presentation, and Advanced Writing for Fiction, Business and Journalism, all areas in which I've had professional experience, including four books published (a novel, a travel guide, an interview handbook, and a collection of short stories), and editing credits for several others.

At the heart of all of these is expression, and feeling more confident about how we communicate with others and the world around us. Even more simply put, I'm interested in helping my students to feel more Okay about these matters, rather than Not Okay, or struggling.

For hundreds of thousands of years, we human apes have communicated our ideas to one another using various forms of language. Only relatively recently has this taken the form of writing with alphabets and reading texts. Already, before our eyes, this is changing with the advent of speech-to-text and audio digital technology. How we exchange ideas may well look different in a generation's time, and this developing landscape is a topic I often find useful to discuss with my students too.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

Two teachers in particular stand out for their profound and personal inspiration, one at school and one as an adult, but there have been many people along the way who have helped and illuminated and generally been brilliant!
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

Deep knowledge and understanding of the subject, patience, organisation, and a genuine interest in - and ability to connect with - students; plus having some fun!
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

When I was little my grandpa told me it was important to be able to say: "I did my best." I didn't really understand the implications then of what he was saying but now I think it is a very powerful principle and highly applicable to learning and education, where we constantly face new challenges and obstacles/opportunities.

Indeed, in my life, where before I may have looked back at things that might have gone wrong or been problematic, nowadays I am resolutely forward-thinking and determined to begin 'Now' and make the very best of whatever the situation may require.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

Good writing is often difficult. By its nature, we must open ourselves up to the unknown, the source of creativity and flow and the mysteries of language, not to mention any gnarly ideas we're trying to work through and organise.

I remember vividly as a kid wanting to put down onto the page the flow of words in my head - which could seem sometimes so effortless and free-flowing and great! - but struggling as soon as I had pen in hand. I've spent a great deal of time since, looking at this mechanism and working out how to do it effectively, which I love to share in my teaching.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

Sharing ideas and watching students light up when they turn a corner, reach a new level, turn out a great piece of work, or know that they are learning something worthwhile.

On the side, I like to write - I've a collection of short stories coming out later this year, and I play African drums and saxophone.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

I want my students to be the best they can be and to succeed in whatever sphere of endeavour they strive, and I do everything I can to help them reach their goals and, hopefully, to enjoy the journey (which I'd say is an essential ingredient, especially in English and writing).
