About Maria

I am a Spanish speaking postgraduate who is more than excited to offer my services and help with your journey of learning the most beautiful language in the world.

I offer services for students going through GCSEs & A Levels, as well as offering introductory Spanish to anyone who wants to learn.

I have been through the system myself, I struggled with the teaching methods they used in my school; it was a very general teaching method which didn't cater to neurodiversity, different types of learning preferences and focused more on just getting the information to us, quantity over quality.

During my time in school, I studied Spanish for A Level, I already had a very high level of Spanish so this was a bit easier for me, I may have slightly banked on the fact I was a speaker already and focused less on the literature side, letting my grade fall from an expected A* to an A.

I got full marks in my GCSE Spanish oral, writing and listening, while getting close to full marks in my reading. I know exactly what the markers like, I'd know mostly because my parents used to be markers before I was in school.

GCSE languages usually sit around A1–B1 level, so my lessons are built to take students from “I sort of know it” to confident exam performance especially in speaking, writing, and grammar.

My family background (languages are genuinely “normal life” in our house)
Languages have always been a huge part of my upbringing. My family are all Spanish and French teachers:
- My mum taught Spanish and French for 40 years
- My dad is a professor of Spanish and French and has written multiple books used at Oxford University

Because of this, I’ve grown up surrounded by proper grammar teaching, exam technique, and real language use - not just classroom phrases.

At home, I’ve always had a strong Spanish culture: I watch Spanish television, read Spanish news, and speak Spanish with my family regularly. I’ve also spent multiple periods living and spending a lot of time in Spain, including Seville, Barcelona, and Madrid which really helps with accent, vocabulary, and natural expression.

About the lesson

I’m based in Chorlton and offer in-person and online tutoring across South Manchester & Cheshire.

What I can help with:
Grammar (my speciality!) - tenses, agreements, pronouns, sentence building and word order, explained clearly and practised in a way that sticks
Exam prep + grade boosting - question types, timings, what examiners want, and how to avoid common mistakes
Writing — planning and building stronger answers using higher-level structures
Speaking / Oral exams - role plays, photo cards and conversation prep, plus full mock speaking exams with feedback
Listening + reading - techniques for understanding under time pressure and improving quickly
Films/plays/literature support - strong revision notes for any set content

Resources I use:

Past papers + mark schemes

Exam-board style writing/translation practice

Topic-based vocabulary lists aligned to GCSE themes GCSE textbooks/workbooks matched to level

Custom revision packs (typed + printable): topic notes, phrase banks, sentence starters, model answers

Homework each week (manageable and useful) + speaking prompts between sessions

Everything can be provided typed, printed, or digital depending on the student’s learning style.
